Subject update |Fri Feb 28 10:30:00 UTC 2025
Welcome to this March update.
20 March is results day for the January series and there is a brief window (until 28 March) to re-enter any learners who would like to resit the external assessment taken in January.
The 2026 January and May provisional timetables are available in this update as well as details of how to provide feedback on the dates. Any feedback must be received before 21 March.
The ERA resources (featured below 'Key dates') are partially organised in line with units on the BTEC Nationals in Business and certainly worth a look.

Support Business Teaching with Multimedia Resources from the Educational Recording Agency (ERA)
The ERA Licence provides seamless access to television and radio recordings, offering a single point of clearance for the rights needed to create and use authentic media resources in your classroom. With ERA’s free video streaming platform, licensed institutions can explore a rich library of curriculum-mapped TV and radio clips tailored to GCSE, AS, and A-level teaching.
Engage your learners with curated clips, full-length documentaries, and programmes that bring business contexts to life.
To access this free resource registration is required - but is quick and simple. State schools in England are licensed under a central agreement with the DfE and the vast majority of independent schools also hold a current ERA Licence.
If learners sat their terminal external assessment in January and are eligible to certificate, you can either submit certification claims or allow them to resit in the summer.
Certification claims for January assessments open on 21 March and close on 18 April via Edexcel Online.
You can use the grade calculator or check Section 8 of the specification to determine final grades. If a learner does wish to resit the terminal external assessment, you can still choose to submit a certification claim for them if they are eligible, or you can choose to wait until the summer.
When considering resits, you should think about the likelihood of improvement and the potential impact on other assessments and learner wellbeing.
The BTEC Tech Awards are compensatory, meaning that even if a learner receives a U grade in one component, they may still achieve an overall qualification grade if their total UMS points across all components are sufficient.

We have now published national results data on the BTEC Firsts and Nationals covering key information on registrations, performance, and trends across the main qualifications.
In December, the DfE published the outcomes of the Review of Qualifications Reform at Level 3 in England. This confirms which qualifications will be funded for 16-19 learners in England for the academic years 2025/26 and 2026/27.
The review has confirmed that the government will not move forward with the proposal to restrict the study programme rules of combination to one AAQ and two A levels. This means that you can work with students and their parents to determine the best study programme for each learner.
The approach the review has taken means funding decisions will vary by sector. We have updated our funding guides to reflect the latest guidance for academic years 2025/2026 and 2026/27.
