BTEC Firsts

BTEC Firsts provide both Key Stage 4 and Post-16 learners with the opportunity to take a vocational qualification in their chosen area of study. These qualifications are designed to equip both sets of learners with the skills and knowledge they will need to progress to further study.

BTEC First Awards for KS4 (Level 1/2)

In schools, learners have the opportunity to study a BTEC First Award (120 GLH) in their chosen subject as part of their wider programme of study.

Outcome
A learner’s final grade will determine whether they achieve a Level 1 or Level 2 Award.

Purpose
A BTEC First Award is designed to equip learners with the skills and knowledge to progress to further study at Level 2 or Level 3 depending on their final qualification grade.

BTEC Firsts for Post-16 (Level 2)

For post-16 learners BTEC Firsts offer learners the Certificate (240 GLH), Extended Certificate(360 GLH) or Diploma (480 GLH) as their main focus of study.

Outcome
Post-16 learners can achieve either a Certificate (240 GLH), Extended Certificate (360 GLH) or Diploma (480 GLH).

Purpose
BTEC Level 2 Firsts are designed for learners wishing to progress to Level 3 study such as BTEC Nationals, BTEC Specialist qualifications or A Levels.
