Free access to exam scripts service

Many of you have given us positive feedback about the Access to Scripts service, and how it informs future teaching and learning. We're delighted to let you know that this service will be available for the following.

Pearson is offering a new, free online service to centres that will allow you to download copies of your students' exam scripts. For further information about ​this new​ ​service, please see the Access to scripts (ATS) tab below. We ​are unable to process requests directly from students for this service.

All Exams Officers can request post-results services, but you will need to get permission from students before applying.

Requests must be made through Edexcel Online and you will receive an automatic confirmation email acknowledging the receipt of the application. We can't accept late requests, so please ensure that you retain your confirmation emails.

Declining grades for BTEC

In order to resit an externally assessed unit, learners must have a valid and open BTEC registration. This means that if you've claimed their full qualification award, but want to resit the assessment, you'll need to decline their grade before you'll be able to enter them for the resit.

Our Enquiry About Results (EAR) services allow you to request us to run additional checks that the grades we've issued your candidates are correct. 

What is it?

A check of all clerical procedures which lead to us issuing a result. This includes making sure:

  • all parts of the exam paper have been marked
  • marks have been recorded/added up correctly
  • special consideration has been applied (where appropriate)
  • the grade boundaries have been applied accurately

You might consider this service if the results for one candidate are unexpected compared to the rest of the cohort.

Candidates’ marks or grades can go up, down or stay the same.

To get a copy of the reviewed exam paper, you should request an Access to Script (ATS) service at the same time as submitting the EAR request. There is a fee for this additional service.

What is it?

A check that our examiners have marked externally assessed components correctly. This includes:

  • the clerical check (EAR1) service
  • a review of marking of units/components by a senior examiner

You can request us to review the marking of exam papers for individual candidates and the results for each candidate will be reported separately. This service isn't available for internally assessed/externally moderated coursework components.

Candidates’ marks or grades can go up, down or stay the same.

To get a copy of the reviewed exam paper, you should request an Access to Script (ATS) service at the same time as submitting the EAR request. There is a fee for this additional service.

What is it?

Where we've adjusted centre marks during moderation, this service check that our moderator has made an accurate judgement on the centre’s ability to mark the work to the national standard. This includes:

  • a review of the original moderation by a senior moderator
  • feedback with a similar level of detail to the original moderator report

This service can't be requested if we agreed centre marks during moderation.

A review of moderation (EAR3) replicates the original moderation process and therefore the same sample will need to be available for review. Any mark changes may impact all candidates completing this component at the centre in the current exam session.

Candidates’ uniform mark scores (UMS) can up, down or stay the same but grades will not be lowered for the current exam session.

This means that if a candidate’s mark is lowered their grade won’t change as a result of a review of moderation (EAR3) in this exam session. However their new mark will be used to calculate any future overall grades that require this component e.g. an A level grade using an AS coursework mark.

Our approach to managing all post-results services is to ensure that every candidate has a result that accurately reflects their performance, to maintain confidence in our qualifications and outcomes. However if, as a centre, you have concerns regarding the marking for a component or subject cohort, you should submit requests for reviews of marking for all candidates you believe to be affected. This will enable us to take a holistic view of the quality of marking and allow us to take any corrective action which may be required in a timely fashion.

You must obtain written candidate consent for reviews of marking after the publication of results, as with these services, candidates’ marks and subject grades may be lowered. Candidates must be informed of this possible outcome and provide their written consent before an application is submitted.

Our Access to Script (ATS) services allow you to request copies of your candidates' marked exam papers. Scripts do not have examiner annotation on them. The marked script allows teachers to evaluate how the student performed on particular questions in relation to what they have been taught; the Principal Examiner's Report and the exemplars that we make available demonstrate how the mark scheme is applied.

Our new Pearson Access to Script self-service online portal allows you to view electronically marked scripts as part of the Enquiries about Results service. The system is web based and facilitates:

  • viewing of electronically marked scripts online
  • printing of scripts in pdf format to be printed or saved and distributed electronically

Written permission must be obtained from candidates before accessing their script(s) on the Access to Script self-service online portal. 

This Access to Script self-service portal will be available for you to access your candidates’ scripts free of charge for all scripts that have been marked electronically. It is designed to be a self-service portal, where you can access, view and download your candidates’ scripts in PDF format free of charge.

This portal is accessible via Edexcel Online and we have produced a user guide to help you through the system along with a set of Frequently Asked Questions.

What is it?

This service allows you to request a copy of a marked exam paper to support teaching or learning. If the exam paper was marked electronically, it will be returned as an electronic PDF copy. All other exam papers will be returned in the post.

Once an exam paper has been returned it's not possible to request for a review of marking (EAR2/EAR2P).

What is it?

This service allows you to request a copy of an exam paper once it has been reviewed as part of an Enquire About Results (EAR) request. It includes a copy of the marked exam paper, sent either electronically as a PDF or as a printed hard copy.

This service should be requested at the same time as the Enquires About Result (EAR) request.

If you are dissatisfied with the outcome of an Enquire About Results (EAR), special consideration or access arrangement request, you may wish to appeal against the decision.

We will allow the head of centre (or designated member of the centre’s senior management team or examinations manager) 30 calendar days from the receipt of the outcome, during which an appeal may be lodged by writing to the following address:

We cannot accept appeals directly from candidates, their parents or other third parties acting on their behalf. However, private candidates may appeal directly without the support of the entering centre.

Appeals should normally be lodged on the basis of whether the awarding body used procedures that were consistent with the regulatory requirements (see links below), and applied its procedures properly and fairly in arriving at judgments. The appeals office may refuse to accept an appeal if no procedural ground is specified.

The procedures which are open to investigation include the full range of processes involved in, and leading to, the award of grades:

  • the setting of papers
  • marking and moderation
  • the grade award
  • EARs and administrative arrangements.
The appeals process is not generally directly concerned with making judgments about the quality of candidates’ work, as this is the responsibility of senior examiners and moderators.
Therefore appeals do not normally involve the further review of marking or moderation of work, unless the initial appeals investigation suggests that procedures were not followed during the EAR.
For AS and A level and Project qualifications only, Ofqual has extended the grounds of appeal so that schools and colleges can make additional grounds that:
  • a marking or moderation error was not corrected during the review of marking or moderation; or
  • a marking or moderation error occurred during the review of marking or moderation.
It is important to note that if you are appealing on these extended grounds, you must indicate exactly where you are contending that there has been a marking or moderation error and what that error is. If you are unable to do so, we may not be able to carry out an appeal investigation.
In considering whether or not to appeal, it is important to note Ofqual’s ‘Guidance on considering marking errors on a review or appeal’, which states that:
‘Following a review or an appeal, a reasonable mark should not be replaced with another such mark, simply because those carrying out the review or the appeal would have given a different mark if they were the original Assessor. We do not consider that one such mark should be replaced with another (often higher) mark, as then Learners who request a review or appeal would be unfairly advantaged over those who do not. A review or appeal should not be an opportunity for a Learner to have a second go at getting a better mark. Such a review or appeal should only interfere with a mark where there has been a Marking Error.’
Ofqual has defined a marking error as:

‘The awarding of a mark or the arrival at an outcome of Moderation which could not reasonably have been given or arrived at given the evidence generated by the Learner(s) (and for Moderation, the centre’s marking of that evidence), the criteria against which Learners’ performance is differentiated and any procedures of the awarding organisation in relation to Moderation or marking, including in particular where the awarding of a mark or outcome of moderation is based on: an Administrative Error, a failure to apply such criteria and procedures to the evidence generated by the Learner(s) where that failure did not involve the exercise of academic judgment, or an unreasonable exercise of academic judgment’.

Centres may also appeal against decisions made by Pearson concerning special consideration cases, including cases where an aegrotat award has been made, and access arrangements. In these cases, the centre may contact the appeals office directly, without first requesting an EAR.

When an appeal is lodged, we will carry out a preliminary appeals investigation. This will take the form of a fresh examination of all available evidence and may involve research officers, subject-related assessment staff and senior examining personnel. We will inspect the EAR files and other relevant records for accuracy.

For AS, A level and Project qualifications only, we will also refer, where it has been identified by the appellant, the details of the alleged marking or moderation error to a senior examiner or moderator for further review and response. That senior examiner or moderator will not have had any involvement in the original marking or moderation of the component.

We will acknowledge each letter of appeal within two working days of receipt, at which point, we will provide further written guidance on the Edexcel appeals process. We will send a letter, summarising the results of the initial appeals investigation, normally within 5 calendar weeks of receipt of the letter of appeal. In the event that the appeals office is unable to complete its enquiries within 25 days, we will advise the centre of the likely extent of any delay.

If, following the initial investigation, a centre remains dissatisfied with our response, the head of centre may request the opportunity to present the case in person at a hearing of the Pearson appeals panel. If, following an appeal hearing, the centre remains dissatisfied, it may submit an appeal to:

Ofqual's Examinations Procedures Review Service (EPRS)

We will normally expect centres to contribute towards the costs of appeal investigations and hearings. The maximum amounts that we will charge are £120 per examination component for the initial appeal investigation, and £150 for any subsequent appeal hearing. There is no requirement for any fee to be submitted with the initial letter of appeal. We will not charge centres for special consideration appeals, nor for other appeals if an appeal is upheld.
