Project Qualification Black history
Designed to meet the needs of key stage 3 learners, the Black History pathway is a school developed programme of study which expands student knowledge and understanding of Black History by exploring a topic that is personal or local to the school.
Why focus your PQ on Black History?
Developed in collaboration with staff from the Samuel Whitbread Academy, who piloted the programme with their Year 9 students, learners are encouraged to take this thematic approach to their pre-gcse study of history, which is built around and accredited against the Higher Project Qualification assessment framework. After completing the Black History programme, staff and students reflected upon their learning experiences. A member of senior leadership and the lead teacher for the programme share their experiences about why they felt this programme was important to their school and students. Students also share what they learnt and how this has changed their viewpoint about the study of history. These videos are available to watch on our YouTube playlist.
Through this HPQ project, students develop the skills of:
- Planning
- Research and investigation
- Extended writing
- Reviewing and evaluating
Centres interested in exploring the power of a Project Qualification at KS3, have access to the materials used by the pilot school, which can be found under the Teaching and Learning resources section.
The resources include:
- An introduction presentation for either staff/parents or students, which will provide the overview of the HPQ and what students will do during the project. Download HPQ: Black History "Introduction" Lesson
Lessons focused upon the key topics of:
- How to choose a title
- What makes a successful title
- How to structure an essay
- How to conduct primary research
- How to reference sources of information
- How to evaluate sources of information
Each of these can be downloaded and adapted to the needs of the students.
To support students, we are also providing a title checklist and report checklist. Both of these will help learners to track their progress and check off completed stages of their project.
Samuel Whitbread Academy: HPQ Case Study
Samuel Whitbread Academy are paving the way for other likeminded schools to bring BlackHistory to life through the Higher Project Qualification with Pearson Edexcel. Students whofelt that they could not see themselves represented in the content covered in the historycurriculum or who have a keen interest in history, called for a greater opportunity to studyand learn about British BAME history, politics and wider societal issues, and through acollaboration between the academy staff and Pearson, the HPQ Black History programmewas created.
