Geography in the News aims to stimulate discussion about the relevance of geography to our lives and its importance in helping us to make sense of the world around us. In this first edition we have selected a relevant news article, with links to our A level Geography specification and suggested questions for you to discuss with your students.

"Is nature's carbon sink failing?"

This links to Edexcel A level Geography Topic 6: The Carbon Cycle and Energy Security and also provides an opportunity to revisit the specialist concepts of thresholds, feedback, and equilibrium.

Curriculum and Assessment Review

We’re pleased to have contributed to the Government’s call for evidence as part of the Curriculum and Assessment Review. Joining the voices of other sector experts, educators, parents/carers and learners, we've shared our research, experiences and recommendations with the panel.

We’re sharing key points from our submission, where we set out our recommendations for effecting meaningful change in education.

It is pleasing, if unsurprising, to see that our recommendations for how meaningful change include addressing over-burdened GCSE curricula and reduce excessive content to help free up curriculum space and time. In particular, we believe there are opportunities to reduce excessive content in GCSE English, GCSE Sciences, GCSE Geography, GCSE History, GCSE Maths, and GCSE Design and Technology.

A Level Geography Specification (Issue 6) - Minor erratum relating to 4B.3b (A Level page 36, AS page 40)

During the editorial process, ‘demographic and cultural’ (the wording used in the previous issues) were inadvertently replaced with ‘economic and social’. We have now restored ‘demographic and cultural’, as was originally intended.

The Issue number of the specification remains unchanged but the date in the footer has now been changed from September to December
