Important update on availability of QCF BTEC Level 3 Art and Design qualifications (2010)
As you will be aware from previous communications and updates, last year the DfE undertook a review of funding for post-16 qualifications in England.
As a result, the following QCF Art and Design qualifications were classified as pre-existing and will therefore no longer be available for registrations in England after 31 July 2020:
- 500/7333/3 Pearson BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Art and Design
- 500/7144/0 Pearson BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Art and Design
Please note that these qualifications are still available in Northern Ireland, Wales and internationally for final registrations until 30 September 2020.
The full DfE list or pre-existing Pearson qualifications being withdrawn from July 2020 in England can be found in the document - Announcement: funding outcome for level 3 pre-existing qualifications.
Although other sizes in Level 3 QCF Art and Design qualifications were not affected by the DfE review of funding, in order to offer the new Art and Design Practice 2019 qualifications (see information below) and avoid overlap of provision in internally assessed Art and Design qualifications, final registrations for the following qualifications in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and internationally will be 30 September 2020:
- 600/3890/1 Pearson BTEC Level 3 90-Credit Diploma in Art and Design
- 500/7298/5 Pearson BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Art and Design
- 500/7566/4 Pearson BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Art and Design
You can still register a final cohort of learners onto any of these 3 qualifications this September, but as they will no longer be available for further registrations in 2021, top-ups from smaller to larger qualifications or transferring from larger to smaller qualifications will not be available after September 2020.
2019 Art and Design Practice qualifications
In response to teacher feedback about their needs in creative qualifications, in 2019 we introduced new BTEC Nationals in Art and Design Practice available in 540 Diploma (90 Credit Diploma equivalent) and 1080 Extended Diploma sizes.

These 100% internally assessed qualifications offer up to date alternatives to the 2010 QCF qualifications, are approved for 16-18 funding and carry the same UCAS points as the QCF and RQF BTEC Nationals. They benefit from a simple and holistic structure that allows for thorough skills development and portfolio building, supporting progression to HE or directly into industry. Training and Networking events are currently underway if you want to learn more about these options.
