Pearson Edexcel GCSEs Mathematics (9–1) from 2015 Enhanced tiering support
Helping you make the right decision for your students with tier of entry decisions.
In our many conversations with teachers over the last couple of years, we know that tier of entry decisions continues to be a challenge.
To help you with this, we have produced some Enhanced Tiering Support for our GCSE (9-1) Mathematics qualification which we have updated to include Summer 2023 questions and performance. This support will provide you with a number of tools to help determine a suitable tier of entry for your students.
The enhanced tiering support comprises:
1. Tiering guidance
To show the key differences in content and assessment between the two tiers.
2. Exemplification of performance at grade 4 and grade 5
A summary of mathematical skills that students achieving a secure grade 4/5 were able to demonstrate in the summer 2018 and 2019 exams.
3. Diagnostic tests
There are three sets of diagnostic tests which have been created using questions and the performance of students in Summer 2018, Summer 2019 and Summer 2023. These diagnostic tests have been designed to help you determine a suitable tier of entry for mock exams. These tests are designed for students who are targeting grade 4.
Student-friendly mark schemes and Question Level Analysis (QLA) spreadsheets are provided for each test.
Watch our most recent training network on Tiering decisions. This network has a clear focus on gathering the data you need, getting the students prepared fully over 2 or three years and keeping parents informed to help you make the correct tiering decisions. You are also given some ideas and support for last minute decisions.
