As the June assessment series progresses, I hope you have time to reflect on the positive impact you are having on your students' lives and a chance to make space for your personal wellbeing. This time of year can be very intense yet rewarding, and we are here to support you every step of the way. As always, we continue to welcome any feedback on how we can improve our qualifications and processes to ensure the best outcomes and experiences for your learners and yourselves as educators.

This update is full of resources to support your delivery, assessment and submission of work as we near the end of this assessment series. I will also ensure to include relevant information for Results Days and help you prepare for these important dates for learners.

For updates on the qualification(s) you deliver, please see the relevant sections below.

Candidate Malpractice

Did you know that the most common form of candidate malpractice every exam series is the possession of a mobile phone?

According to data published by Ofqual, possession of a mobile phone accounted for 44.5% of all cases of student malpractice - 2,180 cases - in the summer 2023 series. This was an increase on the 1,825 cases seen in the summer 2022 series.

The JCQ awarding bodies have set out the agreed sanctions for the different types of candidate malpractice, including for possession of a mobile phone. These can be found in Appendix 6 of the JCQ Suspected Malpractice Policies and Procedures. You can see that the sanctions for possession of a mobile phone are severe, because we need to maintain the security and integrity of our exams:

  •  mobile phone in the candidate’s possession but no evidence of being used by the candidate – loss of marks
  • mobile phone in the candidate’s possession and evidence of being used by the candidate – disqualification

We really want to see a reduction in this form of malpractice, which has such a significant impact on so many candidates. Please ensure that you’ve taken the following steps to help your learners avoid committing malpractice:

  • clear communication to learners and their parents about items prohibited in exams, including mobile phones
  • clear publication and display of the JCQ exam room posters
  • sharing the JCQ Preparing to sit your exams infographic with learners and their parents
  • having a member of your centre’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT) deliver a pre-exam series assembly, to clearly explain the expectations of learners and the exam rules
  • ensuring you have in place, and learners know about, a process for the safe collection and storage of their mobile phones during exams

Download the JCQ exam room posters

For qualifications with written exams, such as A Level History of Art, there is also a helpful JCQ document you can give to learners prior to their exams to help them prepare.

View the JCQ Preparing to sit your exams infographic (for written exams)

For qualifications with a practical period of sustained focus in exam conditions, such as GCSE, International GCSE, and A Level Art and Design titles, you should refer to the exam conditions guidance in the relevant Specification and Administrative Support Guide linked in the qualification sections below.

It has been brought to our attention that one of the portfolios added to our GCSE Exemplar Library on Monday 15 April contained the incorrect images. The portfolio in question was a Component 2 Photography portfolio on a mark of 56/72. The incorrect images were taken from a Photography portfolio on a lower mark of 48/72 which was also added to the library on the same day. The portfolio on 56/72 has now been corrected on our website.

If you have used the incorrect portfolio as part of your internal assessment, we strongly recommend reviewing the corrected version before submitting your marks.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused. If you have any questions about these portfolios, please do not hesitate to contact us via the Pearson Support Portal.

Check out our new Exemplar Library, a gallery view of our student exemplars organised by performance level and component. Designed with teachers and access in mind, it is a great way to assess and standardise internally.

This library was updated in April 2024 with additional exemplars to support your internal assessment and standardisation.

A Level History of Art Updates

As students prepare to sit the Summer 2024 examinations, I recommend reading the June 2023 Examiner Reports as well as looking at the Exemplar Materials to inform your revision planning. You can also find further support and guidance under the drop-down menus below.

Date A Level History of Art
20 May 2024 Paper 1 exam (PM)
3 June 2024 Paper 2 exam (AM)
15 August 2024 A Level Results Day
26 September 2024 Review of marking (Services 1 and 2) deadline
Access to Scripts post-review of marking (ATSPE) and original (ATSO) deadline
13 December 2024 Access to Scripts photocopy (ATSC) deadline

Following feedback from Summer 2023 regarding the image quality in Paper 1, we have made some alterations to the layout of the paper to support candidates in completing the examination.

Section A: Visual Analysis section has had some slight alterations in the Question Booklet. We have now added a ‘Blank Page’ between each of the images for Questions 1 to 3. When candidates now open the booklet they will see a blank page on the left-hand side, with the image and the question on the right-hand page. Section B will start on the next page following Question 3 in the booklet as normal.

We hope that this change will support your candidates.

These are some resources on the qualification course materials pages to support you with planning and delivery.
