A Level, GCSE and International GCSE Art May update

The JCQ awarding bodies have set out the agreed sanctions for the different types of candidate malpractice, including for possession of a mobile phone. These can be found in Appendix 6 of the JCQ Suspected Malpractice Policies and Procedures. You can see that the sanctions for possession of a mobile phone are severe, because we need to maintain the security and integrity of our exams:

•  mobile phone in the candidate’s possession but no evidence of being used by the candidate – loss of marks
• mobile phone in the candidate’s possession and evidence of being used by the candidate – disqualification

We really want to see a reduction in this form of malpractice, which has such a significant impact on so many candidates. Please ensure that you’ve taken the following steps to help your learners avoid committing malpractice:

• clear communication to learners and their parents about items prohibited in exams, including mobile phones
• clear publication and display of the JCQ exam room posters
• sharing the JCQ Preparing to sit your exams infographic with learners and their parents
• having a member of your centre’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT) deliver a pre-exam series assembly, to clearly explain the expectations of learners and the exam rules
• ensuring you have in place, and learners know about, a process for the safe collection and storage of their mobile phones during exams

As GCSE Art and Design assessment and moderation draws closer, here are a few reminders to help centres prepare.

For visiting moderation, moderators will contact centres directly in mid-late April to arrange a moderation visit and marks are due 48 hours prior to this date on Edexcel Online for all learners.

For international centres using digital submission, marks for all candidates as well as the portfolios and paperwork for sampled learners must be uploaded to Learner Work Transfer by 31 May 2024.

It has been brought to our attention that one of the portfolios added to our GCSE Exemplar Library on Monday 15 April contained the incorrect images. The portfolio in question was a Component 2 Photography portfolio on a mark of 56/72. The incorrect images were taken from a Photography portfolio on a lower mark of 48/72 which was also added to the library on the same day. The portfolio on 56/72 has now been corrected on our website.

If you have used the incorrect portfolio as part of your internal assessment, we strongly recommend reviewing the corrected version before submitting your marks.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused. If you have any questions about these portfolios, please do not hesitate to contact us via the Pearson Support Portal.

This library was updated in May 2024 with additional exemplars to support your internal assessment and standardisation.

Following feedback from Summer 2023 regarding the image quality in Paper 1, we have made some alterations to the layout of the paper to support candidates in completing the examination. 

Section A: Visual Analysis section has had some slight alterations in the Question Booklet. We have now added a ‘Blank Page’ between each of the images for Questions 1 to 3. When candidates now open the booklet they will see a blank page on the left-hand side, with the image and the question on the right-hand page. Section B will start on the next page following Question 3 in the booklet as normal. 

We hope that this change will support your candidates.
