May 2026 History subject update
This update contains useful information, news and advice for Edexcel History teachers including new A level History student walkthrough videos and a reminder of the student support materials we have for GCSE History.
Key Dates
NEA submission deadline: The deadline for submitting A level coursework samples and marks to us is 15 May 2026 for Summer 2026 certification. Please note that your Exams Officer may have their own internal deadlines and you also need to take into account the requirement to inform students of their centre assessed marks.

This summer we will be releasing question papers, mark schemes and examiner reports via the relevant qualification page on our website on the following dates:
- GCSE / International GCSE question papers will be released on 23 June 2026.
- GCSE / International GCSE mark schemes will be released on 21 July 2026.
- GCSE / International GCSE examiners reports will be made available on our website from 25 August 2026.
- AS / A level question papers will be released on 30 June 2026.
- AS / A level mark schemes will be released on 14 July 2026.
- AS / A level examiner reports will be available on our website from 18 August 2026.
- You will also be able to download GCSE and A level examiner reports from results day via ResultsPlus.

New A level History student walkthrough videos
We’ve worked with one of our specialist trainers, Jane Marjoram, to create these new student walkthrough videos to support Edexcel A level History students ahead of this summer’s exams. In the pdf document below, you can find recordings for different skills and question types on Paper 1. We’ll be updating this with links to more videos over the next couple of weeks.

Reminder of GCSE History minor content amendments for first assessment Summer 2026
Ahead of this summer’s exams this is a final reminder of the minor content amendments that were made to our GCSE History specification in 2024 for first assessment Summer 2026.

Students risk their qualifications by taking phones into exam hall
This is an important reminder from Ofqual ahead of this summer's exams that students should not be taking mobile phones into exam halls.
New Migration to Britain 1900-1980 teaching resources from the British Library
Learn about Jewish, Polish, Caribbean and South Asian people who moved to Britain with resources from the British Library’s Discovering Historical Sources project. These include a short animation, a timeline, historical sources, and expert articles written by leading academics.
Teaching Medieval Women Nottingham CPD Day
Teaching Medieval Women are hosting their third annual CPD day at Nottingham Trent University on 25 June. The day is free to attend and is intended to introduce teachers to new examples of medieval women and ways they can incorporate more medieval women into their own teaching with talks from historians, archivists and teachers.
New report calls for action on teaching empire, migration and belonging in schools
The Portrait EMB project have recently published a report on their findings based on a large-scale national study into teaching about the British Empire and Migration. The report calls on exam boards to reframe GCSE and A level History specifications, and we are already working with the Portrait EMB team to review our content and explore what this might look like as we work towards future spec reform.
