We’ve produced a list of all activities that have been approved. This list is available on the GCSE PE page. On the page, click on 'Meeting Local Needs' under ‘Documents'.

Approval for additional activities must be submitted to us by 30 October in the academic year of first teaching. Over the last few years we have approved many additional activities through the Meeting Local Needs (MLN) process. All applications must be submitted to us by 30 October in the academic year of first teaching.

In addition to all the activities listed in the specification, we've produced a list of all activities that have been approved through Meeting Local Needs. You will find the list in the course materials section of the GCSE PE page.

If you would like to offer an activity that:

  1. Is not listed in the specification but is on the MLN list, you must complete an MLN1 form
  2. Is not listed in the specification and is not on the MLN list, you must complete both an MLN1 and an MLN2 form.

If the activity you'd like to offer is on the MLN list, then you only need to complete the MLN1 form. You don't need to complete the MLN2 form (submit assessment criteria) for activities already approved on the MLN list.

You can only offer and assess an activity on the MLN list providing you have been given approval by us through the MLN process. If you offer/assess an activity on the MLN list without approval, your candidates will be awarded a 0 in that activity.

Once you have completed the relevant forms(s) and submitted the form(s) to us, we'll  acknowledge receipt of the application within 7 working days and confirm an outcome to the centre within 30 working days of receipt of an application. If the application is successful, and the activity has already been approved, we will then send you pre-approved assessment criteria. It is only when you receive this assessment criteria from us that you can assess the candidates.

Once approval has been given by us, this will be for the lifetime of the specification. However, if circumstances at the centre change, the centre is obliged to inform us so that we can check that the centre still meets the Meeting Local Needs requirements.

There is no guarantee that we will approve additional/alternative activities and therefore centres should apply as early as possible so that there is enough time for the candidate to select a different activity if the MLN application is unsuccessful.

If an application has been approved, proof may be requested by your allocated moderator as part of the moderation process. Please keep the confirmation email from the assessment team safe so that you can show it to the moderator.

Centres do not need approval to assess activities listed in the specification. The assessment criteria for these activities can be found within the controlled assessment guide or the specification on the GCSE PE qualification page.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any further information.
