Pathways and Support for Learners Working Towards GCSE and Grade 4

In this training course, we look at the various pathways available to support learners working towards accessing GCSE and Grade 4.

Session 1 looks at the various Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications in mathematics available to learners, including Entry Level Certificate, Edexcel Awards and Functional Skills.

Session 2 looks at possible pathways to support progression for students working towards GCSE and Grade 4.  We look at strategies and resources to support students in KS3, at the start of KS4 and via Y11 intervention, as well as support for students with SEND.

Making an early start with Y11 intervention - "Paper Society"

image

{{errorMessage}}

I recently listened to the wonderful Jo Morgan talking about the benefits of running a Y11 "Paper Society" and specifically not waiting until after mocks, but starting as soon as Y11 return to school in September.

If you haven't heard about 'paper society' before, it is simply an hour after school where your Y11 students come to work through past and practice papers in an relaxed and studious environment with a couple of maths teachers on hand to support where needed (and, most importantly, plenty of biscuits!).

If you are thinking of running a Paper Society of your own, but worried about running out of past papers, why not start students off working through our mock and shadow papers?

All of the papers linked below come with mark schemes and offer valuable practice for your students. Shadow papers also have the additional benefit that you can reasonably compare student performance to the grade boundaries on the associated live series.

GCSE Mock Papers

GCSE Mock Set 10 is now available to centres using our Mocks Service in 2024-25.

Learn more about our Mocks Service

GCSE Mock Sets 1 - 9 are available under padlock for all centres to access and can be found within the Mock Paper section of Teaching and Learning Materials on the qualification page using the link below.

Mock Set 10 will be released to the website and available under padlock from January 2025. These will be the final set of mock papers produced. Mock Sets 1 - 10 will remain available under padlock for the lifetime of the qualification.

GCSE Mock Sets 1 - 7 are also available on the Maths Emporium.

GCSE Mock Set 8 will be available on the Maths Emporium from January 2025.

New GCSE Maths FE Online Diagnostic Assessments

NEW for September:

A new updated version of our online assessments will allow teachers to be able to quickly diagnose and plan the learning for each student.

We have created three online quizzes using past questions from the 1MA1 GCSE Mathematics specification to create online diagnostic assessments that students can complete in under an hour. We have also now made these assessments downloadable as PDFs if this is more convenient for you and your learners.

These assessments consist of 31 questions across the 28 topics to provide teachers with a quick and easy-to use-solution to understand your students’ strengths and areas for focus.

New Resource - You Are The Assessor

In this month's Functional Skills blog we will be taking a look at the marking of Functional Skills assessments and Pearson’s new weekly LinkedIn content called  You Are The Assessor .

Understanding how assessments are marked is important for both tutors and learners. For many learners there are fine margins between passing and failing an assessment and understanding how to pick up additional marks could make the difference. For tutors, accurate marking of mock assessments gives a better understanding of how prepared learners are for live assessments. This blog will give guidance on how to mark our assessments like a pro to support your professional development and the development of your learners.
