April 2025 Subject Advisor Update for Early Years

Welcome to the April edition of the subject advisor update. I hope you are enjoying the beginning of spring and manage to get a break over the Easter Holiday. 

This month there is exciting news about the Tech Award. There is news about the new BTEC National in Early Childhood Development AAQ and BTEC Level 2 Technicals Early Years Practitioner for first teach September 2025.

Earlier release of the PSAs

PSAs will be released three months earlier, giving more time for teachers to plan, prepare, mark, and upload assessments. 

This means we will be releasing upcoming PSA’s on:

2 June 2025 for the December/January 2025/26 assessment series.

1 September 2025 for the May/June 2026 assessment series.

Earlier release dates will not alter the submission deadlines each series, nor affect learners currently working towards the 15 May 2025 submission deadline.

Getting ready to upload the sample

The Learner Work Transfer will open for uploading the learner sample on 14 April.  You then have until 15 May to upload the sample ready for Moderation. 

You will be able to see the sample selected on Edexcel online.

BTEC National Early Years Development AAQ (first teach September 2025)

There are more resources being added all the time for the new qualification.  There is a new teacher Guide and more PSABs have been released. These will help you with your planning for the new course.  There is an Administrative Support Guide will help you with the conditions that the PSABs need to be completed under. 

Early Childhood Development AAQ

New BTEC Level 2 Technical Occupational Entry for Early Years Practitioner (Diploma)  (first teach September 2025)

This qualification will replace the current Level 2 Technical for Children's Play learning and Development (Early years Practitioner) that will be defunded in Summer 2025. 

The new qualification gives a learner a Licence to Practice at Level 2. The Specification has been updated and contains all internally assessed units.  The units are all mandatory but all internally assessed.  It comes with a transition guide to help you make the change to the new qualification.
