This data is published annually each autumn, when most students expecting to complete their BTEC this year have finished their course.
BTECs are rigorous, future-focused and globally recognised qualifications that equip learners of all ages with the knowledge, skills, behaviours and confidence to succeed in a modern, skills-based economy. Students who have achieved their BTEC in 2023 are many of the future healthcare professionals, engineers and construction workers who are vital to the UK’s economy. Around 50 percent of Level 3 BTEC graduates will continue into Higher Education in the UK, with the rest going into employment, an apprenticeship or further study.
Headlines from this year’s results show:
Level 1/2 BTEC Tech Awards
- Health & Social Care, Sport, Enterprise, Digital Information Technology and Music are the five most popular subjects.
- This was the first academic year when qualification results were available to learners and, in line with the policy directive from Ofqual, a slightly weaker level of performance was accepted to reflect the fact that teachers and learners are less familiar with the assessments.

Level 2 BTEC Firsts
- Business, Sport & ICT are the most popular sectors.
- As these are legacy qualifications, there has been a decrease in entry volumes across all qualification sizes. Many learners transitioning onto new qualifications such as BTEC Tech Awards (2022).
- The First Award (120 GLH) size remains by far the most popular size. The First Award is equivalent to a GCSE and can be delivered alongside other KS4 qualifications.
- Given the significant changes in cohort size and make-up, comparisons to historical years is not possible and must be treated with caution.
Level 3 BTEC Nationals (2016 RQF)
- Business, Health & Social Care, Applied Science, Sport and Information Technology remain the five most popular sectors.
- The Extended Certificate (360 size) remains the most popular size.
- Overall entries across all qualification sizes have remained relatively stable compared to 2023.
- Overall outcomes have remained broadly stable across the different sizes compared to 2023.

Along with A levels and GCSEs, vocational qualifications have continued with the pre-pandemic assessment and grading process. We have delivered our primary aim in our approach to grading, following DfE and Ofqual direction, ensuring fairness for BTEC learners when compared to their peers.
Students should be very proud of their results this year. We want to thank every teacher, tutor, lecturer, school and college leader and parents and carers, for the incredible effort they have made to support students achieving the grades they have worked so hard for.
