Changes to sample sizes for GCSE and GCE PE Component 4

From June 2026, we will be asking you to submit a slightly larger sample size for moderation for Component 4 for GCSE and GCE PE

This change is designed to make moderation smoother and reduce the need for additional sample requests later in the year.

Therefore if you are selecting your students for sampling for the May 26 moderation submission, please ensure that you refer the information here and in the Instructions to the Conduct of NEA guidacen document.

Special consideration for GCSE PE – Component 3

For Practical Performance, if the centre has formally assessed the candidate(s) and awarded the mark during the course of study it is not required for candidate(s) to apply for special consideration. You must inform the moderator that you have formally assessed the learner in all activities, and is now injured and cannot be part of the sample. You should then submit the marks in exactly the same way as you do for every other learner.

However, if the candidate(s) has never been formally assessed in one or more activity during the whole course of study, then they should apply for special consideration.

If the candidate(s) has failed to participate in an assessment/examination without valid reason, it is expected that they will be awarded the mark of absent and special consideration cannot be requested.

For further guidance see page 28 in the Instructions for the Conduct of NEA

Instructions for the Conduct of Non Examined Assessment (NEA) - Summer 2026

Centres will need to fill in two forms:

• JCQ’s Form 10

• Pearson’s Form 10 (for practical performance)

Applications for special consideration along with the appropriate documentation, such as a medical certificate, should be sent to uk.special.requirements@ pearson.com

Review of Component 3 and Component 4 centre marks by candidates for GCSE and GCE PE

On the GCSE and A level PE specifications, Component 3 and Component 4 are marked by teachers before being moderated externally which
means there is no option for individual reviews once results have been published. The only post-results service available is a review of moderation (Service 3), which looks at the whole cohort, not at individual candidates. As such, the only opportunity for an individual candidate to query their mark, is before marks are submitted to the awarding body.

It is therefore essential that the processes surrounding assessment uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism, and centres must ensure that students are both informed of their marks, and given the opportunity to request a review of the centre’s marking, before marks are submitted to the awarding body

Please read this guidance on the responsibilites of the centre ahead of the published deadlines for submission of marks, the review process, and resources to support you and your students.submission of marks
