Introducing the Citizenship Studies subject advisor

My name is Susan Currey and I'm thrilled to be supporting you with our Citizenship Studies qualification.  I come from a teaching background and have been working in a range of different schools since 2008 as both a teacher and subject leader.

In this time, I have mentored ECTs, delivered CPD and led whole school Citizenship programmes across schools, as well as working as an examiner. I am excited to be taking on this role and I look forward to sharing resources, ideas and working with teachers to support students taking GCSE Citizenship Studies.

The subject advisor role is intended to support you so please do get in touch with any questions you may have.

Summer 2023: return to normal series

In Summer 2022 Citizenship Studies students were provided with Advance Information, identifying the major focus of the exams which students could use to help focus their revision.

Earlier this year the Department for Education announced the return to full subject content and assessment coverage for subjects such as Citizenship Studies in Summer 2023.  They have stated that their “intention is to return to the carefully designed and well-established pre-pandemic assessment arrangements as quickly as possible, given they are the best and fairest way of assessing what students know and can do.”

Teachers should therefore plan and work on the basis that Summer 2023 will be a normal exam series with no Advance Information, however the DfE and Ofqual stated that they will “continue to monitor the path and impact of the pandemic and evaluate the delivery of arrangements this year, including the provision of exam aids, such as formulae sheets, and advance information to support students’ revision, before finalising 2023 arrangements.”

We will update teachers if we receive any further updates from the DfE and Ofqual on Summer 2023.

GCSE Citizenship Studies amends

As many of you know, the DfE released new content requirements for a range of subjects, including GCSE Citizenship Studies, to reflect the UK’s departure from the European Union.

Changes to our specification have now been approved by Ofqual and information about this can be found on the news items below.  This includes the revised specification, sample assessment materials and resources helping you to understand the changes.

Young Citizens Magistrates' Court Mock trial competition

Young Citizens organises a Magistrates’ Court Mock Trial Competition to help young people understand how the law affects their lives and gain an insight into the legal justice system.  This helps students understand the law, supports skills in explanation, critical analysis and building up evidenced arguments.

Schools who enter are supported with resources, criminal cases and the opportunity to enter local and regional rounds.
