Proposed approach to awarding competency-based and apprenticeship-related qualifications in summer 2020

Wed May 13 15:30:00 UTC 2020

Dear Colleague,

Following on from our communication on 1 May about our proposed approach to awarding results for vocational, technical and other general qualifications, we can now share with you further details for qualifications which are likely to follow an adapted or delayed assessment approach.

This is subject to the outcomes of the Ofqual consultation for vocational and technical qualifications and any further directions from Ofqual and the Secretary of State.

We have produced short sector guides to provide guidance on the proposed assessment arrangements for our competency-based qualifications, as well as qualifications within our BTEC Specialist and Professional suite, which form part of an apprenticeship. You just need to refer to the sector(s) guide(s) that are relevant for your centre.

This guidance applies only to assessments due to be completed between 20 March and 31 July 2020, which were unable to go ahead as usual due to Covid-19. Given that a key  purpose of these qualifications is entry into employment, often signalling occupational or professional competence, we anticipate it will be confirmed that they will largely follow an adapted assessment approach.

It is also important to recognise that some assessments must be retained where criteria are critical components of occupational or professional competence. In these circumstances, adaptation may not be appropriate or available, and therefore unfortunately some assessments will have to be delayed until restrictions have been lifted, or it is safe to continue with assessments.

We will be issuing a separate guide for the calculated results approach, which will cover the BTEC Level 3 Nationals, BTEC Levels 2 and 3 Technicals, BTEC Level 1/2 Tech Awards and BTEC Level 1/2 Firsts. The BTEC Higher Nationals will also have a separate guide covering relevant mitigation processes, which will follow once the Ofqual consultation has concluded.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have a query.

Best wishes,

Cindy Rampersaud
Senior Vice President, BTEC and Apprenticeships
