Changes to Aerospace and Aviation Engineering Qualifications to meet new Apprenticeship Standards
Updated specifications have been released for the BTEC Level 3 Diploma and Extended Diploma in Aerospace and Aviation Engineering (Development Technical Knowledge) and the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Aerospace and Aviation Engineering (Development Competence).
These changes are to ensure qualifications remain compatible with the new apprenticeship standards: The recently-approved Aircraft Maintenance Technician (which uses the L3 Competence Diploma and L3 knowledge Diploma), and the forthcoming Aerospace Engineering Technician (AET) Apprenticeship which will now specify the L3 Extended Diploma knowledge qualification and three new ‘Principles’ units in Technical support.
All changes are summarised in specification and we direct centres to select these new units where the employers have mandated them for apprentices. Any new or existing units mandated by the apprentice employer groups are included in the optional group, as other groups of learners may not need to take them. However a version for the new AET apprenticeship will be available for separate registration on Edexcel Online, which ensures the units aren’t inadvertently missed for these apprentices. The certificate title is unchanged.
Updates to the Engineering Technical Support Technician Apprenticeship
The new apprenticeship standard ‘Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technician’ is available and specifies a new mandatory qualification, developed from the Advanced Manufacturing Engineering L3 Diploma (Development Technical Knowledge). This is called ‘Level 3 Diploma in Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technologies’, using an agreed set of AME units with the employer group. We hope to have the new qualification available for January 2025 and it has been agreed that Pearson’s version will be updated in the published standard once the qualification is regulated.
The existing apprenticeship remains live and available in the interim, which uses the existing Level 3 Diploma in AME, but is expected to close in the new year.
Updates to Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence)
We have added new optional units to the above qualification to help better serve apprenticeships in the aerospace sector. The units are as follows:
Unit 34: Carrying out Aircraft Detail Fitting Activities
Unit 35: Installing Aircraft Mechanical Fasteners
Unit 36: Producing Composite Mouldings using Pre-Preg Techniques
Unit 37: Carrying out Repairs on Composite Mouldings
These are available now, as of December 2024, and qualification structures have been automatically updated in Edexcel online.
