Teaching and Learning materials

Unit 1 is assessed through a Pearson Set Assignment, which is released annually by Pearson and must be used for that assessment cycle.

You should expect the new assignment to be published towards the end of June/start of July, giving you time to plan ahead for teaching and delivery in the next academic year. I will provide further details in my next update when it has been uploaded.

Post-16 level 3 and below pathways government consultation response

The DfE has now published the outcomes of the post-16 level 3 and below pathways consultation in England:

Government consultation response

To maintain stability during the transition to the new qualifications, the government has confirmed that existing funded qualifications will remain funded until the reformed qualifications are available.

For Protective Services, this means funding for the current BTEC qualifications will be removed in the academic year 2029 to 2030, to coincide with the availability of the new qualifications. This means you can continue to register learners on the current qualifications until July 2029.

You can read our full response to the outcomes of the consultation our website, as well as our updated funding guides:

Pearson's response

Your opportunity to review and respond to reform!

Ofqual have launched a consultation on regulating post-16 vocational and technical qualifications at levels 2 and 3.

Deadline: 2 July 2026

Review + Respond

The government has now published its Post‑16 Pathways: Implementation Plan, setting out how the new technical and vocational qualification landscape will roll out from 2027 onwards.

The plan confirms the move to:

  • V Levels, T Levels and A levels at Level 3
  • Foundation Certificates and Occupational Certificates at Level 2

What about Protective Services?

At the moment, there’s limited new detail specifically for Protective Services.
Protective Services remains in the expected rollout pipeline for 2029/2030.
