Onscreen Exams for GCSE English: December 2024 update
As you know, we have been working with schools and colleges to explore the power and potential for onscreen GCSE English exams to support the next steps in our journey.
Our plans have always been subject to regulatory approval, and collaboration across the education community is crucial in making sure the further introduction of onscreen assessment works for all teachers and students. Right now, we don't yet have a confirmed timeline for the introduction of GCSE English onscreen exams.
What's next?
We will continue to keep you updated and we remain as committed as ever to providing students with the opportunity to show what they know and can do in the mode that is best for them.
This summer alone has shown the power of exam choice and technology:
We saw a significant increase in the number of schools and colleges choosing onscreen exam options (where available), with over 11,000 students taking their GCSE, International GCSE and International A level exams onscreen.
Over 90,000 word-processed scripts were submitted to us this year. This included 12,329 scripts for English GCSEs.
Many of these choices were driven by students' ways of working and/or to support students with additional needs. Giving every student the opportunity to thrive is a key priority for us. So, alongside continuing our onscreen journey, we have a range of access arrangements and alternative formats that you can explore to support your students in the year ahead.
