BTEC Nationals in Engineering - Specification update

Following on from the recent review of the BTEC Nationals in Engineering (RQF) specification, DfE has now approved the changes to the specification.

Access issue 6 of the BTEC Nationals in Engineering specifications

The changes are:

  • the addition of a new Unit 56: Industrial Robotics to the Diploma and Extended Diploma qualifications
  • the removal of the barred combinations for Unit: 8 Further Engineering Mathematics and Unit 36: Programmable Logic Controllers from the Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering
  • the increase in the number of barred units (from one to two units) that could be taken/delivered in the specialist qualifications, relaxing the barred combinations for Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Mechanical Engineering / Computer Engineering / Manufacturing Engineering / Aeronautical Engineering
  • an additional external assessment series for Unit 6: Microcontroller Systems for Engineers each year (in January and May/June from 2020) and new content in Topic A1 to include ARMĀ® microcontrollers and development software and Topic A2 that includes additional types of presence sensors - reed switch, inductive and capacitive proximity sensors, and passive infra-red (PIR) sensors
