The new AS/A Level Design and Technology qualification is designed to:

Qualification Structure and Specification Content

There are now 2 separate qualifications:

  • AS Level Design and Technology
  • A Level Design and Technology

AS Level Design and Technology

The subject content sets out the knowledge, understanding and skills relevant to this qualification. Together with the assessment information, it provides the framework within which centres create their programmes of study, so ensuring progression from GCSE Level requirements and the possibilities for progression to Advanced Level GCE and higher education.

A Level Design and Technology

The A level Design and Technology is developed to ensure clear progression from GCSE and AS Levels, and allows possibility for progression to higher education. 

There is also the requirement for Maths skills in both AS and A Level qualifications as these are fundamental to design and technology. These will be embedded within the examinations for these qualifications.

Content and assessment overview 

Both AS and A level Design and Technology are separate qualifications. Each one consists of 2 components. 

AS Level Design and Technology

  • Component 1: Principles of Design and Technology - 

                - Written Exam, 50% of AS.

  • Component 2: Independent Design and Make Project - 50% AS
                - Non-Examined Assessment, 50% AS.
 
                - Learners work independently to produce a small-scale design and make and evaluate a project by responding to the contextual challenge set by Pearson. 

A Level Design and Technology

 
  • Component 1: Principles of Design and Technology - 50% of A Level
                - Written Exam, 50% of the total A Level Qualification.
 
  • Component 2: Independent Design and Make Project - 50% of A Level
                - Non-Examined Assessment, 50% of the total A Level Qualification.
 
                - Learners will undertake a substantial design and make and evaluate a project which will test learners`skills in designing and making a prototype. 
                - Learners are required to individually and in consultation with a client/end user, identify a design possibility independently.
