Citizenship in the News

'Citizenship Studies in the News’ aims to stimulate discussion for GCSE Citizenship Studies by considering contemporary issues and their relevance to our lives.

We have compiled a range of current news articles* and linked these to the key questions, explored in themes A-D of the specification. You may wish to investigate and integrate into your teaching practice to help contextualise key issues and bring the subject to life!

Edition 11 includes the following articles:

  • Theme A: "Michael Obafemi: Man sentenced for sending racist tweet" and "Haverfordwest councillor's alleged slave comments investigated"- Both articles come from The BBC
  • Theme B: ‘"Labour wants tax rises to fall on the ‘broadest shoulders”. – written by Rafael Behr from The Guardian
  • Theme C: "Call for biscuit and cake ban to protect children from sugar"- By Neil Shaw Assistant Editor for SurreyLive
  • Theme D: "Ukraine war latest: 'Insane' if West gives Ukraine nuclear weapons, says Russia" - Published on Sky News
