The announcement states that the DfE will finalise aspects of the Progress 8 in February, but provides updates on three topics in the interim. The third topic is GCSE English Literature. To summarise, the update states:

  • A student's best result from either GCSE English Language or GCSE English Literature will be double-weighted in the Progress 8 and Attainment 8 measures.
  • GCSE English Language or GCSE English Literature will count as 'English' in the English and Maths percentage.
  • GCSE English Language or GCSE English Literature will count as 'English' in the English Baccalaureate measure.

For any of these to count, both GCSEs must be taken, with the lower scoring of the two still counting as a single-weighted subject in the 'other three' slots of the Progress/Attainment 8 measures.
