The BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in Healthcare Practice for England and the Nursing Associate Apprenticeship

Skills for Health and the Institute for Apprenticeships have announced the approval of this long-anticipated Higher Apprenticeship Standard, which will equip Apprentices training to be Nursing Associates.

The new BTEC HND in Healthcare Practice for England has been designed with this new role in mind, as well as the role of the Assistant Practitioner. A pathway in the qualification (Nursing) has been mapped to the Nursing Associate Standard. This mapping can be found below.

In addition to this, Pearson will be releasing a Practical Learning, Assessment and Development (PLAD) workbook that accompanies the specification for the HND, which provides material to support training providers working with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) approved institutions to deliver the Standard.

An updated version of the Specification, and the accompanying PLAD will be available on our website by January 2018.

Centre approval

To ensure that centres are ready to assess students and that we can provide the support that is needed all centres must be approved before they can offer the HND. For more information about becoming a centre and seeking approval to run our qualifications please visit the support section on our website.

More about the Nursing Associate Apprenticeship standard

The Standard has been developed by the Healthcare Trailblazer group which includes the NHS and other Health and Social Care employers. It outlines the skills, knowledge and behaviours required of the apprentice and the job they will need to be able to do by the time they have completed their apprenticeship.

The nursing associate is a new level 5 role, which will act as a bridge between healthcare assistants and graduate registered nurses, and will be regulated by the NMC. You can find the approved standard here.

The Standard mandates a regulated Level 5 Higher Education Diploma or Foundation Degree, delivered by an institution approved by the NMC to provide pre-registration nursing education.

Please note: Apprenticeship Standards are only ‘ready for delivery’ when the assessment plan is published.
