Sharing best practice events for BTEC Higher Nationals

22 June 2020

In May 2020, we launched a series of HN Network Events which intended to provide an opportunity for centres to share information and get updates in relation to teaching, learning and assessment, associated with BTEC Higher National qualifications.

First set of HN Network Events, each focusing on a different subject, give centres a chance to ask questions and discuss planning for assessments with other delegates as well as Subject Leads from Pearson.

Sharing best practice for qualification delivery

Centres have been remotely engaging in teaching and learning activities for their students, despite restrictions caused by the pandemic. Many have been using different technologies/ systems such as Go2Webinar, Zoom, Padlet for discussions and polls.

Maintaining structure and timetabling sessions was also raised as vital for giving students a routine to their day and ensuring that synchronous learning was taking place.

There is a wealth of good practice being developed around facilitating online discussions, using online tools for students to present work to each other and back to their teachers.

Planning and adapting assessments

For some subjects, like photography, transition to remote teaching was relatively straightforward as assessment can be adapted easily. Other subjects, for example ceramics, which rely heavily on equipment such as potter’s wheel or kiln, students would not be able to find alternatives at home.

One of the key themes, that developed in discussions, was for tutors to look carefully at the unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria, and to consider ways in which their assignment could be ‘adapted’ to allow students to be assessed.

We have previously released guidance for centres which suggests ways they can maintain their provision in the new environment:

We would like to encourage centre staff to get involved in our upcoming HN Network Events taking place July 2020 when we will be sharing and discussing different strategies and resources for flexible and remote teaching and learning in preparation for delivery in September 2020.

During the upcoming sessions, centres will have an opportunity to:

  • Discuss implications of remote approaches to delivery and assessment of Higher Nationals in your sector.
  • Consider appropriate forms of assessment for different types of learning specific to your sector.
  • Share and discuss resources, strategies and examples of good practice for remote teaching and learning.
  • Ask questions of Pearson subject matter experts and suggest topics for training to support delivery and assessment of Higher Nationals.

This event counts as 2 hours CPD.
