We've made further progress since our March 2015 communication about extensions to Higher National qualifications. A significant number of phase 1 qualifications have now been extended and are shown in the list below.

As this is an ongoing and detailed process, there are still qualifications under consideration, and we appreciate your patience while we work towards completing this process as soon as possible. Please note that this will exclude Advanced Practice in Work with Children and Families, which is due to be replaced by a new qualification.

We'll shortly be confirming the extension details for the remaining Phase 2 titles, which are subject to meeting Ofqual's regulatory requirements for extending qualifications.

In the meantime, please see the FAQs below and if you have any other questions about the extensions, email us at highernationals@pearson.com and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have there been any changes to the specification as part of the extension?

We haven't made any substantial changes to the unit specifications as part of these extensions. Where any minor changes have been made, these will be clearly indicated in the specification. We've incorporated the increased English language expectations for Pearson level 4 and level 5 qualifications, which are assessed in English, into the specifications as previously advised. The specifications will be available online.

As an existing BTEC centre, do we need to reapply for programme approval for the extended Higher National qualifications?

No. Your centre will shortly receive a separate letter confirming the extension to your programme approval.
