Fri Feb 14 13:00:00 UTC 2014

Pearson UK President Rod Bristow has commented on Ofqual's report into the quality of marking:

'Public confidence in the quality of marking in exams is fundamental to the success of our education system. We welcome this report from Ofqual and look forward to working with the regulator on its implementation.

'Confidence in the quality of our examiners is key to securing this, and Pearson is working with the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors to support our senior examiners to gain a formal qualification in assessment and ensure high standards across the board.'
'Our priority is to ensure that students get the grades their hard work deserves. The report is also clear on the benefits that on-screen marking technology has brought to marking processes, and Pearson will continue to invest in this area.'

'We fully support the review of the Enquiries about Results and Appeals processes, and will work closely with the regulator to create a system that is straightforward, transparent and increases confidence in the fairness of marking. We are committed to working closely with teachers to improve understanding of the system, and agree with Ofqual that this can help to improve the system.'

The Ofqual report comments on Pearson's work with the Chartered Institute of Educational Assessors. It says, 'Pearson Edexcel in particular is now requiring its senior examiners to gain a formal qualification in assessment. This is a recent and welcome development in the professionalisation of the workforce.'
