The Engineering Council

The Engineering Council is the UK regulatory body for the engineering profession, which holds the national register of over 235,000 professional engineers and technicians.

Licences are granted by the Engineering Council to professional engineering institutions, allowing them to assess candidates for inclusion on its Register of professional engineers and technicians, and to accredit academic programmes and professional development schemes.

Licensed institutions are deemed to have sufficient experience, procedures and resources to undertake the following tasks:

  • assess the competence and commitment of candidates for registration
  • monitor the continuing professional development of registrants
  • monitor the conduct of registrants.

EngTechNow

EngTechNow

The EngTechNow campaign aims to promote EngTech registration as the standard to which all engineering technicians aspire. By working with employers and employees, EngTechNow will help 100,000 technicians and engineers to achieve EngTech status across all engineering disciplines, raising the esteem in which these vital careers are held.

The EngTech title is awarded by engineering bodies that have been approved by the Engineering Council. This means that EngTech is an independently evaluated, internationally recognised mark of an engineering technician's experience, skills and competence, as well as their commitment to their profession that helps them stand out from their peers.

Engineering technicians are trained with the practical knowledge and ability needed to solve engineering problems.

They are required for a wide range of roles in the construction field, which can include involvement of design, development and assembly. This may also include operation or maintenance of equipment or services on-site, as well as technical and supervisory responsibility.

EngTech status works hand-in-hand with membership of a professional engineering institution, giving individuals access to learning, networking and career development resources. It also provides a clear first step on the route to qualifications such as Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Chartered Engineer (CEng).

EngTech is an independently measured assessment and mark of an engineering technician’s qualification, skills, competence, commitment and professionalism. This means that carrying the EngTech title enhances an individual’s status with colleagues and either current or future employers. Ensuring that all suitable engineers and technicians are EngTech registered, this helps companies to recruit and develop the best talent in the engineering field.

EngTechNow has produced some videos with information and case studies to highlight the benefits of EngTech registration for apprentice engineers and employers. Watch the videos.
