March 2025 Psychology subject update

Mon Mar 03 00:00:00 UTC 2025

Welcome to your Pearson Edexcel Psychology March 2025 subject update.

Hello colleagues,

As we approach the exam season in May we know that teachers and students will be increasingly focused on preparing for this, and we want to help to share some key ideas around exam technique. This update contains news of some new video resources which we have started to produce for A Level and IAL psychology, with GCSE videos to follow shortly. Over the next month we will be adding to the playlists linked below and look forward to feedback from teachers and students to inform future resources.

There is also news here of training available, examiner vacancies and some great free resources for use in the classroom.

As ever please don't hesitate to get in touch by email or book a video call with me using the links below if there's anything I can help with.

Best wishes,

Tim Lawrence

The ERA Licence provides seamless access to television and radio recordings, offering a single point of clearance for the rights needed to create and use authentic media resources in your classroom. With ERA’s free video streaming platform, licensed institutions can explore a rich library of curriculum-mapped TV and radio clips tailored to GCSE, AS, and A-level teaching. To access this free resource registration is required - but is quick and simple. State schools in England are licensed under a central agreement with the DfE and the vast majority of independent schools also hold a current ERA Licence.

There are a large number of videos suitable for use in psychology teaching available, including Michael Moseley's The Brain: A Secret History series.

Publicly available recordings of past training events will now be added to the YouTube playlist linked below.

Recordings of training which uses locked exam materials (past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports from the past 12 months) will be available through locked documents (requiring an Edexcel Online teacher login to download) available under 'Past training content' on the 'teaching and learning materials' page - see link below.

There is a great deal of helpful advice for students contained within examiner reports, including examples of candidates' responses with examiner commentary explaining why marks were and weren't awarded. However we know that in general students struggle to access this information. We have therefore started to produce short videos focusing on one question at a time and sharing key feedback, which we hope students and teachers will find useful. These are between three and seven minutes long and could also be shown in the classroom.

Below is one example video, and a link to the playlist on YouTube. You can also give feedback on specific videos or general feedback on these, and/or make requests for future videos, using the form linked below.

There is a great deal of helpful advice for students contained within examiner reports, including examples of candidates' responses with examiner commentary explaining why marks were and weren't awarded. However we know that in general students struggle to access this information.

We therefore plan to produce a new set of short videos aimed at students as well as teachers, sharing key messages and advice from past examiner reports (we won't publicly share reports from papers from the past 12 months though).

Below is a video from 2023 on how to tackle the 12 mark question on Pape 2 which has proven popular, a link to the playlist which we will shortly be adding to, and a link to the form which you can use to make requests for future videos.

Four of our first five videos have used questions from UK A Level exams, but we have selected questions on IAL content, and given the question and mark scheme desgin is the same for both qualifications these are equally relevant to IAL students and teachers..

You can also give feedback on specific videos or general feedback on these, and/or make requests for future videos, using the form linked below.

examWizard is our free tool for locating past papers and building mock exam papers, assessments and practice question banks from a searchable database of past paper questions. It is not available for all qualifications due to the amount of time required to upload questions, and IAL psychology has not previously been supported.

We are happy to announce that IAL psychology questions will become available in examWizard shortly - we anticipate this will be some time in April 2025. We will share more information on this tool once the questions are 'live'.

Thank you to those IAL teachers who took the time to complete our 'examWizard expression of interest form' a few months ago!
