Support from Mobie and Offsite Aliance

A number of colleges have gained approval to deliver the Pearson Higher National Certificate in Modern Methods of Construction ‘HTQ for England version’ or ‘standard HN for everywhere else’ and some are commencing delivery in September. This qualification was developed with industry partners including MOBIE (Ministry of Building Innovation and Education). MOBIE and the Offsite Alliance are keen to support colleges delivering the new qualification.

As a starting point, MOBIE and Offsite Alliance would like to explore the idea of bringing together all colleges that intend to deliver the HNC in Modern Methods of Construction from September to exchange best practice and learning on the new qualification. This new group would sit within the Offsite Alliance Colleges and Industry Training Providers group, chaired by David Wilkins, Vice Principal at Bedford College. MOBIE are keen to find out what support would be helpful to deliver the HNC, which could include:

  • signposting to useful resources for specific units
  • train the trainer sessions for tutors/lecturers - such as Introduction to Offsite
  • projects/assignments - for instance, MOBIE is planning a retrofit young persons' design challenge to start in January 2024 that may be suitable as an assignment topic
  • local industry connection/contacts, for example

Specialist trainers - the Offsite Alliance has created an industry network of individuals who could assist colleges in delivering offsite/MMC content site visits (manufacturing facilities or MMC development sites) information about different processes and materials contacts for students to ask technical questions.

If you are a college delivering the new HNC in September (or you intend to deliver it in 2024) then please contact either Gerry Ruffles, Head of Education at MOBIE (gerry@mobie.org.uk) or Mark Southgate, CEO (mark.southgate@mobie.org.uk) about the group and what industry support you might find helpful.
