DfE updated implementation plan: what this means for your curriculum plans in 2026
Yesterday, the Department for Education (DfE) shared further detail on post-16 qualification reform and implementation timelines.

What you need to know
Computing and IT qualifications extended funding confirmed
If you're planning programmes in Computing and IT, there is additional flexibility for 2027/28.
The DfE has confirmed that the following qualifications previously expected to lose funding will remain funded for a further cohort:
- Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Information Technology
- Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Computing
Giving you more time to plan delivery, manage progression routes and prepare for the introduction of new qualifications.

Planning for new qualifications remains on track
Alongside today's announcements, the DfE has confirmed that the previously announced timeline for the first tranche of new qualifications remains on track.
This means the planned qualifications in digital, education, finance and accounting are still expected to be available for first teaching from September 2027.

Most BTEC qualifications remain available
While qualification reform continues, it's important to note that only a small number of BTEC qualifications are being defunded in 2027/28 as part of the current reforms.
For most sectors, there are no immediate changes to the qualifications you currently deliver. You can continue planning and teaching with confidence until reform reaches your subject area and specific changes are confirmed.
We'll continue to provide clear information about which qualifications are affected, when changes will happen and what actions you may need to consider.

More flexibility when building study programmes
The DfE has also confirmed that there will be no rules restricting combinations of qualifications within study programmes.
This means you can build programmes of study using combinations of:
- A Levels
- V Levels
- Eligible funded BTEC qualifications
This flexibility will help you design programmes that reflect students' ambitions, local needs and progression opportunities.
