BTEC Nationals in Music and Music Technology: September 2017 update

BTEC Nationals (2010)

For the BTEC Nationals (2010) the OSCA window opened on 22 August and will close on 17 October 2017. The results will be released on 7 November 2017. Once the registration for OSCA has lapsed on 1 August, Lead Internal Verifiers must re-register by 30 September 2017 to ensure their registration remains active.

BTEC Nationals (2016, 2017 and 2018)

For Music Technology we now have the full suite of sizes available. This now includes a 180 Guided Learning Hour Certificate size and two 360 GLH Extended Certificates.

We are currently developing a brand new suite for Music and the specification will appear online later this term. It will be available for first teaching in September 2018 and will be submitted for consideration on 2020 performance measures in England.

This summer has seen the first external assessments for the new BTEC Nationals in Music Technology. You will be able to access the question papers online from 11 July with the mark schemes being available from 25 July. The results will be issued on Wednesday 16 August 2017 and they can be released to candidates on this day. The Principal Examiner's report for each externally assessed unit will also be published online on results day.

Access To Scripts

After the summer 2017 results are published in August, centres will be able to view and download scripts which have been marked online free of charge from our Self-Service Portal via Edexcel Online.

The Self-Service Portal will be available until the final post-results deadline for each exam series:

• Summer 2017 - Thursday 28 September

Customers should save and/or print any scripts they need for teaching and learning purposes before the post-results deadline.

Scripts do not have examiner annotation on them. The marked script allows teachers to evaluate how the student performed on particular questions in relation to what they have been taught; the Principal Examiner's Report and the exemplars that we make available demonstrate how the mark scheme is applied.

If scripts have been marked "traditionally" (i.e. not online), centres will have to request them via the Post Results section of Edexcel Online as in previous exam series.

These scripts will also be free of charge, but the final dates to request them are the same as the published JCQ Access to Scripts deadlines.

Understanding marks

Get an overview of how we mark assessments and consistently award grades that fairly reflect a learner's performance. This includes setting grade boundaries and converting raw marks to UMS.

The external assessments will achieve a 'raw mark' when the work is assessed against the marking grids for that external assessment. Grade boundaries are then set for the raw marks againast the set points boundaries for Pass, Merit and Distinction issued in the specification.
