Controlled assessment update

This update is a guide to accessing the May 2013 Controlled Assessment Brief (CAB) for GCSE ICT.

1. Downloading the CAB

The May 2013 Controlled Assessment Brief is available here as a secure download. You will need an Edexcel Online username and password to download the files. If you do not already have a login, you can obtain this from your exams officer who has Edexcel Online admin access.

2. Delivering the CAB

Once you have familiarised yourself with the new CAB, you will find some of the following documentation useful as you deliver and assess the content.

Each CAB is available for submission in a particular assessment window. Take some time to read our update on assessment availability to ensure you are delivering the right CAB with each year group.

The GCSE ICT specification provides a list of topics covered in the CAB and highlights the assessment requirements.

When assessing work you will complete a Controlled Assessment Record (CAR) for each learner. At the end of the course the CAR is digitally signed and sent to the moderator on disk, with the moderation sample.

A new CAB is released each year but the assessment criteria remain the same. You can access exemplar material for the 2010, 2011 and Sample CAB on the Unit 2 pages. There will be exemplar material for the 2012 CAB available in September.

The Controlled Assessment Support Book will support your delivery of the CAB and answer questions you might have about the controlled assessment process.

This Unit 2 Assessment Guidance document exemplifies the standard of evidence required for each of the assessment criteria.

3. Controlled Assessment Brief FAQs

The above documentation will help you to answer any questions you might have about the CAB. I have also provided some answers to the most common questions when accessing and delivering the CAB.

Q. I cannot access the CAB secure download as I do not have a Username/password.
A. Your exams officer has Edexcel Online admin access and can provide you with a login.

Q. I have downloaded the CAB but the pages and files do not display correctly.
A. Please ensure that you have unzipped/extracted the files to a folder. Accessing the content in a zipped file can sometimes lead to display problems.

Q. How can I make the CAB available to my learners?
A. You can display the CAB on your school website, VLE or network. There is no requirement to restrict your learners' access to the CAB, but we do ask that you do not make the CAB available publicly.

Q. Can I print the CAB and give it to my learners?
A. Yes.

Q. How long can my learners spend working on the CAB?
A. Work on completing the CAB is limited to 40 hours. Activities such as research, gathering assets, taking photos and recording sound/video can be undertaken outside the controlled environment, without supervision.

Please let me know if you have questions about any of the content of this update.
