Welcome to the February update!

The Centre Guide to Standards Verification covers much of the administration necessary this term and the key dates timeline is taken from the guide. 

You are invited to join a briefing at the end of February or early March which may answer some of your questions about what will happen to BTEC qualifications from September 2025.  There is also a reminder about a range of Esports podcasts which may be of interest.

Post 16 Level Reforms - what does it mean for BTEC?

On 10 January 2023 the DfE published the latest news about the reform of post-16 level 3 vocational qualifications in England. This event will provides you with an overview of these reforms, and what we know so far about what they will mean for you and your post-16 level 3 vocational curriculum. The reforms do mean that the qualifications landscape will change for you and your learners over the coming years. These events will be updated with further details as soon as we confirm which new qualifications we are developing, and we will be inviting all schools and colleges to get involved to inform these new developments. We will also provide you with all the support you need to make any changes necessary to your curriculum in the future as the result of these reforms.

News from Esports

The British Esports annual event, the Esports in Education Summit, will return on February 10th 2023.  

Sunderland College and British Esports have been working together in a partnership which aims to make Sunderland a global hub for esports.

The College of Esports is the world's first university-level institution dedicated to esports.

Undergraduate courses lead to

  • BA (Hons) International Esports Business
  • BA (Hons) International Esports Business & Digital Media
  • BA (Hons) Esports Coaching & Management
  • BA (Hons) International Esports Business & Digital Marketing
  • BA (Hons) International Esports Business & Events Management

BTEC Esports+ is a new digital resource tailored to support learners who are studying the BTEC Nationals in Esports.

With content developed with the British Esports Federation, the resources are simple, modular, and reusable.

This online resource can give your learners knowledge, understanding, and skills to cover the learning hours of the initial units of the esports qualifications.

Units available

  • Introduction to Esports (mapped to Unit 1)
  • Esports Skills, Team Strategies and In-Game Analysis (mapped to Unit 2)

We are delighted to announce that Kalam Neale has won the 2022 Digital Innovator of the Year.  Kalam is Head of Education at British Esports and teaches Esports at Barnsley College.

 

 

BTEC News

The teaching, learning and assessment page for 2022-23 will keep you up to date with the latest news and information to support you delivering BTEC qualifications. 

Once a learner has completed all units, you can report the learner's achievement and make the overall award claim to receive the relevant certification document.

The funding guides below for 16-19 year olds give you a comprehensive view of funding for 2022/23 – 2024/25. This will give you clarity on how the recent updates on funding for BTEC Level 3 affect your centre and learners.

These guides take us up to the cohort starting in September 2024.

Please note that the situation in England, Northern Ireland and Wales is not necessarily the same for all sectors so please do check the correct file.

So, you can continue to teach your BTECs in Esports with confidence in 2023/24 and 2024/25. Learners will be funded until completion for any courses they start.

For 2025 and beyond, we are working through the implications for each of our BTEC qualifications in all sector suites and we will update all our centres where there are any changes to content, availability, and funding for BTECs.
