GCSE Drama and AS/A level Drama and Theatre 2016
The new AS and A level Drama and Theatre specifications have now been accredited.
There is also:
- a useful Getting Started guide for the specifications, which includes guidance and advice on co-teachability
- a mapping document, showing how elements of the current qualifications link to the new qualifications.
We are still waiting to hear about accreditation for the GCSE Drama specification. We will let you know as soon as have confirmation of the accreditation.

GCSE and A Level visiting examiner
Here is the latest information and guidance on the forthcoming practical examinations for GCSE Drama, unit 3, and A Level Drama and Theatre Studies, unit 2.
Please ensure that exam entries have been made via your exams officer, otherwise you will not be allocated an external examiner.
You will be contacted by your allocated examiner during the first week of February. During this initial contact, the examiner will confirm the number of candidates you have at your centre, session timings, and will ask for your range of proposed dates. We do not allow either party to dictate a date or time, this must be a mutual agreement. Therefore, we advise that centres provide a range of dates.
If your allocated examiner cannot attend any of the range of dates proposed, then your examiner will inform our Contracts and Allocations Team with your proposed range of dates in order to try and allocate you another examiner. We cannot guarantee the allocation of another visiting examiner.
We have this system in place to support both centres and examiners, whereby a range of dates are proposed and a mutual agreement is made to suit both parties.
The Administrative Support Guides for GCSE Drama and A level Drama and Theatre Studies outline the process, your session entitlement and how to run the examinations. Both documents contain useful FAQ’s relating to the practical examinations.
Student volunteers for new GCSE and A level qualifications
Last month I asked for volunteers to help us develop marked students work for the written exam components of the new GCSE and A level Drama qualifications.
We are now looking for centres willing to work with us to develop examples of practical performance work for the new qualifications. This would involve filming your students at some point this term. These marked examples will then be shared with teachers to help them prepare for teaching and assessment.
Please let me know if you are able and happy to be involved by emailing TeachingPerformingArts@Pearson.com with the details of which course ie GCSE and/or A level.
Writing and reviewing opportunities for new GCSE Drama
Pearson are currently looking for additional authors and reviewers to contribute to new revision materials to support the Edexcel GCSE (9-1) Drama specification. Some writing and/or reviewing experience, as well as strong familiarity with Edexcel Drama, is preferred.
If you are interested in finding out more, please email Becky Breuer at email@example.com.
BTEC Nationals in Performing Arts for 2016
In September 2016, you can now choose to:
- start teaching the brand new BTEC Nationals (2016), or
- continue with the current qualifications (2010).
The new BTEC Nationals in Performing Arts draft specifications are now available. There is a specification for each size the qualification, plus an Introductory Guide for the qualification.
You can also access the Sample Assessment Materials for the externally assessed units.
There will be Getting Ready to Teach events in the Spring and Summer terms.
