September 2022 Business update

1 September 2022

Welcome back to the new year!

GCSE Business has some wonderful new resources - booster booklets which can be customised to suit your needs.

There are also important changes to the exams in 2023. GCSE and A level Business will now have separate case study booklets for each paper and GCSE will have more time.

There is also news of network meetings for GCSE Business and training events for International GCSE and IAL.

I hope that the start of term goes well.

New GCSE Booklets

These booklets offer a basic template for teachers and learners and include:

  • specification content
  • key terms
  • a case study
  • exam-style questions
  • explanations of command verbs

These booklets can be customised by adding images, a school logo, further questions.  If you look on the qualification page you will see that there are two files for Topic 1.4.1.  One of them has been customised to provide an example of how this can be done.

These really are an excellent resource.

As part of our work to support a greater engagement with the study of Business and Enterprise, we have produced, in partnership with teachers, a bank of optional lessons and resources that we believe will support teachers in introducing a wide range of concepts into their teaching of the subject. This not only includes the challenges experienced by specific groups of people in our society aiming to progress in their careers in business and enterprise, but also around opportunities for students to reflect on their own opportunities within the subject. This includes materials looking at self reflection, finding a Unique Selling Point, creating a side hustle, being an entrepreneur, and how to set up a formal company. Each lesson includes contextual challenges faced by different people, examples of how we can overcome these, and lessons learnt from people successful in the industry. For each topic there is a lesson powerpoint, handout, and videos either embedded into the materials or providing external links. The structure of each lesson, and their support notes should help you as teacher to deliver each lesson, or you are free to edit these to your own use.

This lesson pack investigates modern avenues and approaches into business and how entrepreneurs have captured new markets and built dynamic offers from the ground up.

GCSE Business topic links:

  • 1.1.2 Risk and reward
  • 1.1.3 The role of business enterprise
  • 1.4.1 The options for start-up and small businesses
  • 2.1.4 Ethics, the environment and business

This lesson pack invites students to look at how an individual’s experiences and background can form the basis of unique and innovative businesses.

GCSE Business topic links:

  • 1.1.1 The dynamic nature of business
  • 1.2.3 Market segmentation
  • 2.1.4 Ethics, the environment and business
  • 2.2.3 Promotion

This lesson pack explores the stages of setting up a business including key elements such as licensing and costs. It also explores some of the challenges faced by people in business from different backgrounds and case studies of how those challenges were overcome.

GCSE Business topic links:

  • 1.1.2 Risk and reward
  • 1.3.1 Business aims and objectives
  • 1.3.4 Sources of business finance
  • 1.4.1 The options for start-up and small businesses
  • 1.4.2 Business location
  • 1.5.3 Legislation and business
  • 2.1.4 Ethics, the environment and business

Understanding assessment and improving delivery in International GCSE Business

In this training delegates will:

- Be introduced to the idea of assessment objectives: what are they and why they are used when writing examination papers.

- Analyse recent question papers and learn which types of question match the different assessment objectives.

- Investigate different assessment objectives, considering how questions that use a levels-based mark scheme have been answered by looking at feedback from previous exam series.

- Discuss strategies for teaching to try and make sure students can access questions targeting different assessment objectives.
