BTEC National news

The assessment format of Unit 2 (Developing a Marketing Campaign) changed from January 2022.

This unit (31489H) forms part of the external assessment on the

  • Level 3 BTEC Nationals in Business
  • Level 3 BTEC Nationals in Enterprise & Entrepreneurship

This overview summarises the key changes.

The Colour Accounting Learning System offers a fresh approach to the teaching of accounting using a concept map which provides a visual representation of the accounting framework that your learners can use to acquire and organise their knowledge.

This learning system is introduced in a free course for teachers on the accountingcafe.org website.  The course is called Teach Accounting with Confidence and takes you through the Business finance aspects of Unit 3 on the BTEC Nationals.

In November 2021, the Secretary of State for Education, announced that the original implementation timetable will be set back by one year.

This means that the phased removal of funding for BTECs that overlap with T Levels, and the phased introduction of the new Level 3 ‘Academic’ and ‘Technical’ qualifications will start from 2024/25 rather than 2023/24.

In 2025, qualifications where there is a 30% or more overlap with T levels will be defunded. This list has not been published yet. Our Business BTEC Nationals may or may not be on that list. We are hoping to find out more before the end of this year.

Business qualifications are in Waves 3 and 4 and we are expecting the first introduction of reformed qualifications to be in September 2026.

As part of our annual qualification review process, we have made the following amendments to our suite of BTEC Nationals in Business to be implemented from September 2022.

We have made a number of general amendments to the specification to improve the clarity of information provided, which can be found listed in the below:

From September 2022:

The BTEC Tech Award 2022 Enterprise Student Book is due to be published this month.

You can also download a draft version of Component 1 of the Student Book as a free sample.

Download Component 1

The Tech Awards from 2022 require entries to be made for internally assessed components as they are set and moderated by Pearson each assessment series.

The entry options listed below are for internally assessed and moderated components only, as there are no external assessments available within the 2022/23 academic year.

Component Title Unit code
Component 1 Exploring Enterprises BEN01
Component 2 Planning and Presenting a Micro-Enterprise Idea BEN02

The qualification number is 603/7063/4

The first Pearson-Set Assignments (PSAs) for Components 1 and 2 will be released on 3 October for moderation in December 2022 to January 2023. As the internal assessments are now moderated within the series, entries must be made for learners wishing to sit the assessment in that series (the entry deadline is 18 October).

Please note that the first assessment series is intended to facilitate those learners who have been taught a sufficient portion of the content for the component to contend with the assessment, such as those who have been taught from Year 9. Please consider carefully when deciding whether to enter learners for the initial assessment.

Provided you have made registrations onto the qualification, you will be able to access the PSAs even if your learners are not being entered for the series. So you will have the opportunity to use the first released PSAs as mock assessments to give learners experience and build their confidence before sitting in a later series.

BTEC Tech Award in Enterprise (2022): Marking and moderation for Internally Assessed Components

During this session, you learn how to apply a 'best fit' approach to marking your learner's work in response to the Pearson Set Assignments for internally assessed components. The marking grids will be applied to standardised examples of learner work to enhance your understanding of how learner evidence meets the criteria. You will get a full overview of the moderation process, including preparation and submission of learner work through Learner Work Transfer (LWT) on Edexcel Online, moderator feedback and amending marks. We will provide delegates with examples of marked learner work in advance of the session alongside a short survey to complete. Delegates should review these materials in advance of the session to best prepare themselves to enter into focused discussions on the assessment of the new Tech Award qualification.

Learning Aims:

- Learn how to apply the new marking grids, record marks and provide learner feedback

- Understand how different characteristics of learner work meet marking criteria at different mark bands

- Gain an overview of the moderation process

- Prepare for submitting marks and samples of learner work for moderation

This event can count as 2 Hours of CPD. Please be aware that this event will be recorded and shared publicly.

The new Tech Awards (first teach Sept 2022) require a different approach to quality assurance. This includes new moderation processes for internal assessments, and a streamlined approach to BTEC Quality Assurance principles which will greatly reduce administration.

Check out the Quality Assurance quick guide, and our full Centre Guide to Quality Assurance for all the details.

We also have a range of bitesize videos available in the BTEC Tech Awards 2022 section on our Quality Assurance webpage covering:

  • Introduction to Quality Assurance
  • Completing the Assessment Record
  • Guide to applying Mark Schemes
  • Moderation Process

We have also created a new Tech Award Assessment Record template that can be found via our 'BTEC assessment and IV templates' link below.

Go to the BTEC Assessment and IV templates page

UK schools who have offered any Pearson Edexcel GCSEs in the last three academic years will be automatically approved to deliver BTEC Tech Awards 2022 across all subject areas, therefore no further action is required. You will be able to make registrations for any new BTEC Tech Award qualification from 1 September 2022.

UK schools that offer BTEC Tech Awards or BTEC Firsts, but not Pearson Edexcel GCSEs, or offer them alongside GCSEs with another awarding organisation, will need to fill out a fast-track approval form. This will take up to 5 working days to process, dependant on internal checks.

Other UK providers that wish to offer theses qualifications will need to submit a full application, including a JCQ Centre Approval application if not already JCQ inspected (CCEA Centre Approval in Northern Ireland, WJEC Centre Approval in Wales).

Registrations for all new BTEC Tech Award qualifications will be available to centres meeting the above approval criteria from 1 September 2022.

We previously sent communications to centres delivering new BTEC Tech Awards to Year 9 learners requesting early registration onto our temporary registration system. This was to avoid accidental registration onto legacy BTEC Tech Awards.

We have now closed this temporary registration system, so if you are currently delivering to Year 9 learners, you can register them from 1 September as they begin Year 10.

This event introduces the new qualification in detail and discusses all the key information about changes from the current Tech Award.

Videos

The new BTEC Tech Award will be moderated in line with new DFE requirements, and we are currently recruiting moderators.

Working with Pearson as a moderator brings you the added benefit of being standardised directly by the Senior Assessment Team in your subject and seeing the work produced by many other schools throughout the moderation process.

Apply to become a moderator for the 2022 BTEC Tech Awards please.

We are currently producing marked samples of learner work for use as centre and moderator standardisation materials and as part of teacher marking training events. We know that some centres have begun delivering the new BTEC Tech Awards and may have undertaken mock assessments based on the Sample PSAs.

If you have done any mock assessment for internal components, your learner’s work can help us to train teachers and moderators throughout the UK. Please contact Robert.East@Pearson.com for more details. We will be providing £50 Amazon gift vouchers for each piece of learner work used.

The 2022 Tech Awards FAQs page is now live.

Go to the FAQ page.

BTEC Assessment

The process for the registration and standardisation of LIVs remains the same as in previous years.

Please note:

  • BTEC Level 1/2 Tech Awards (from 2017, last certificate 2023) will still require the registration of an LIV and team standardisation.
  • The new Tech Awards (first teach from Sept 22) will not require LIV registration due to the introduction of Pearson Set Assignments and moderation.

You can find a short video explaining how to register as LIV here.

Videos

Centre Standardisation Materials are now available to allow you to complete standardisation activity by Friday 14 October 2022 or before any formal assessment takes place, whichever is sooner. Additional information can be found in the BTEC Centre Guide to Quality Assurance 2022-2023.

For NQF/ RQF programmes, you should confirm standardisation has taken place by selecting the standardised box within the OSCA registration page by Friday 14 October 2022.

Last month, Ofqual confirmed the subject content and assessment arrangements for qualifications in the following academic year (2022/23).

They confirmed that:

“For other qualifications, including vocational and technical qualifications taught alongside or instead of GCSEs, AS and A levels, a range of adaptations were permitted in academic year 2021 to 2022. […] Given that public health restrictions are no longer in place, these adaptations are no longer necessary for the academic year 2022 to 2023 onwards.”

This means our main adaptation of streamlined assessment will not be available in 2022/23, so you should plan to teach and assess the BTEC qualifications as normal.

As part of our work to support a greater engagement with the study of Business and Enterprise, we have produced, in partnership with teachers, a bank of optional lessons and resources that we believe will support teachers in introducing a wide range of concepts into their teaching of the subject. This not only includes the challenges experienced by specific groups of people in our society aiming to progress in their careers in business and enterprise, but also around opportunities for students to reflect on their own opportunities within the subject. This includes materials looking at self reflection, finding a Unique Selling Point, creating a side hustle, being an entrepreneur, and how to set up a formal company. Each lesson includes contextual challenges faced by different people, examples of how we can overcome these, and lessons learnt from people successful in the industry. For each topic there is a lesson powerpoint, handout, and videos either embedded into the materials or providing external links. The structure of each lesson, and their support notes should help you as teacher to deliver each lesson, or you are free to edit these to your own use.

This lesson pack provides a framework and toolkit for students to recognise skills they already have in Business and how to identify and develop skills for the future.
