May/June 2022 exam series

The Department for Education and Ofqual have now released their consultation outcomes on the proposed changes to the assessment of GCSEs, AS and A Levels in 2022.

Advance information

This will apply to:

  • AS and A level Business,
  • GCSE Business
  • International GCSE Business

To make exams in 2022 less daunting, students will be told in advance some of the topic areas that will be included on the exam papers, helping them to manage their exam preparation. This information will be issued in the spring term to help students to focus their revision time.

However, the DfE have confirmed that if the impact of the pandemic worsens, this could be issued earlier in the academic year. We will update you on the timing of the advance information release once this has been confirmed.

Advance Notice will not apply to International A Level Business unit examinations in May/June 2022. Students have opportunities to sit International A Level examinations in the January, May/June and October/November series. Due to the modular approach of these qualifications, we have decided the fairest and most consistent approach for students is to continue running them as a regular series.

Our Summer 2022 support page has got a set of Frequently Asked Questions that we would recommend reading. We will keep these updated as and when more information is needed or becomes available.

Grading

Ofqual has also published its position on grading (grade boundaries) for the May/June 2022 exam series.

The EBEA

The Economics, Business and Enterprise Association (EBEA) is the professional subject association for everyone interested in the teaching and study of Economics, Business and Enterprise.

It is free to become a registered member and this gives you access to an archive of journals and articles which are older than one year. Paid membership (which is tax deductible) provides you with a monthly newsletter and a termly printed journal.

This is the second of a series of monthly online GCSE and A level Business network events. These events offer you a place to network with colleagues, share ideas, strategies and resources.

This second session (21 October) will focus on turning theory into practical business activities for students which can be delivered online or in the classroom.

The third session (17 November) will focus on ‘Evaluation’ providing exemplars and activities to support the teaching of this important skill to help students develop valuable exam technique.

The fourth session (8 December) will aim to support you with mocks and preparing for assessment in 2022.  This session will focus on marking levels-based responses.

First Network event - 21 September

Lead trainer and teacher Paul Clarke led the first of our Autumn series of network events and the focus was on the challenges around returning to school following the significant disruption to the education of students over the past two years, and looking at ways in which teachers could focus their teaching and learning to make the most of the time left until the 2022 examination series.

Paul led by sharing ideas and examples of both the flipped classroom and the bookletisation of sections of the course.

In break out rooms teachers shared insights into what they were prioritising and how they were tackling the challenges at their centre

Paul rounded up the event with a look at supporting assessment, and shared resources from his centre.

Pearson’s approach for IAS/IAL qualifications for May/June 2021 is for centres to provide letter grades by unit. The unit results from this series will have associated UMS scores so that they can be aggregated with both existing unit results from prior exam series and unit results from future exam series.

The first document below shows how UMS conversions worked last year (the same method will apply this year), and the second document explains and illustrates the application of the unit aggregation and certification rules
