January 2022 Business update

12 January 2022

May I start this first update of the year by wishing you a Happy New Year!

The May/June 2022 exams are on our minds at the moment and how Advance Information will apply to Business exams (not IAL). With this in mind there are three events at the end of the month which may be of interest.

There are some key dates relating to the release of 2020 and 2021 exam materials as well as the usual features on each of our four qualifications. You may be interested in a new activity which has been uploaded to the A level Business dropbox (on vegan pet food (1.3)).

A level and GCSE exam papers and mark schemes from the October/November 2020 exam series will be available (unpadlocked) from 18 January 2022. We will not be making examiner reports publicly available at this point.

This is a joint decision with other awarding organisations to support home-educated learners and learners re-taking qualifications after leaving school.

This applies only to our GCSE and A Level qualifications.

May/June 2022 exam series

This page provides information and support to you and your students as you prepare for the summer 2022 assessments. We’ll be releasing more information and guidance as arrangements are confirmed and will ensure we keep you up to date with all the qualification news for summer 2022.

This will apply to:

  • AS and A level Business,
  • GCSE Business
  • International GCSE Business

The purpose of advance information is to support students’ revision, and it is intended to give information in advance about the focus of the content of the summer 2022 exams. We have also made the decision to make advance information available for our International GCSEs in Business, Commerce and Economics, in line with the approach taken for UK GCSE qualifications. Advance information does not apply to International Advanced Levels in Business and Economics which have a modular assessment structure.

Our website is up-to-date with FAQs on advance information.

The JCQ document aims to give teachers a further view of what advance information is and is not, and to answer key questions.

The advance information will be released no later than 7 February 2022 but could be earlier, depending on any change in the severity of the pandemic.

Contingency arrangements that are being put in place in the unlikely event that examinations cannot take place in May/June 2022.

Grading

Ofqual has also published its position on grading (grade boundaries) for the May/June 2022 exam series.

The first in our series of monthly spring term Business A Level network events, focuses on addressing the problems we see with candidate responses as examiners, and examples of different ways you can help students to develop their chains of reasoning.

Please note: a recording of the event will be available to attendees only.

The second in our series of monthly spring term Business A Level network events, focuses on advance information. Subject to the expected release of the advance information for A Level Business, this session will be an opportunity for delegates to discuss the release and share ideas about how they might adapt their plans leading up to the summer 2022 series.

Please note: a recording of the event will be available to attendees only.

Ahead of the publication of the advance information, we have been working with JCQ awarding organisations to provide some further guidance to help teachers and students better understand the advance information (for example what will be covered and the level of variation to expect), to aid planning ahead of the release of advance information.

This guidance aims to give teachers and students an indication of the approach that will be taken to advance information and is now available to access under 'Summer 2022 support' on the  'Teaching and learning materials' page for GCSE Business.

This guidance does not replace the advance information itself which will be released  by 7 February 2022 at the latest, unless the Department for Education (DfE) decides on an earlier release date. It should also be read alongside the JCQ advance information guidance which has already been published.

Help your GCSE Business students prepare for mocks and stay confident with the free Pearson Revise web app and a 55% discount* on revision books!

The exam question finder tool allows you to find questions from the 2016-2019 exam series allowing you to filter by paper, topic, marks, question number and year. The document links directly to the case study in each case.

The further assessment materials contain short papers focusing on key areas of the specification. Each paper contains two questions, a mark scheme and annotated exemplar answers.

The additional assessment materials were produced last summer but are catalogued by theme and sub topic.

A-Z Business training is running a face-to-face day with Ian Marcouse on the 2022 paper 3 context on 28 January in Central London.

An online version runs on 31 January.

Ian will prepare Powerpoints, case studies and plenty of mock exam questions and mark schemes/answers based on the new task. All the materials will be on the complimentary memory stick – handed to those doing the full day course and posted to those taking it online.

The pre-released context for the May/June 2022 paper 3 is now available.
