February 2021 BTEC Business update

8 February 2021

The Ofqual consultation closed on 29 January. We expect the consultation response in mid-late February and the Pearson response and guidance for centres in late February or early March.

In the meantime the 3 February Vocational Bulletin provided a very useful list of all the things we expect to know more about as part of the consultation outcome.

Be The Future 2021

Be The Future is a social enterprise challenge for all students in Key Stages 3–5.

The challenge is to create a social enterprise idea that addresses a social or environmental issue, such as poverty, climate change or inequality. We want to hear your ideas for a social enterprise that could work to resolve these issues.

Learners with the top entries will win an online enterprise workshop, hosted by the Peter Jones Foundation, with the opportunity to meet and hear from leading social entrepreneurs. They will also win a social enterprise hamper, full of small business goodies.

Learners are encouraged to submit a short video pitch (2 minutes, max) of their idea, or an activity sheet if they can't do the video.

The Be the Future website has more information about the campaign, our partnership with the Peter Jones Foundation and the relevant documents to submit your entries.

Go to the Be The Future website

Reduced Unit Assessment

Reduced Optional Unit Assessments will be applied to the:

• BTEC RQF Nationals (2016 –2020)
• BTEC QCF Nationals 2010
• BTEC Firsts

There is a reminder that all content should be taught and that all mandatory content must be taught and assessed.

Standards Verification

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, all sampling will be conducted remotely. We strongly recommend that centres to submit their standards verification samples digitally using Pearson’s Digital Learner Work Transfer platform (DLWT) or their own file-share platform. If digital submission is not possible centres should use our free secure courier service to send the sample via USB.

Read how to submit files via DLWT

There is guidance on how to encrypt files in Appendix A of the BTEC Guide to Standards Verification.

Go to the BTEC Centre Guide to Standards Verification

Please do not send us the originals of the work if submitting as we will be unable to return them to you once sampling has been completed.

Web for BTEC

This is a search engine for BTEC and covers both Level 2 and 3 qualifications (like Google for BTEC!).

It will provide search results that have been mapped specifically to our standards. It enables a learner to develop research skills by only providing content that has been specially selected as being appropriate in content and with the added benefit of being checked from a safeguarding perspective.

Learners can select their age to view age relevant content as well as select content based on reading ability. It is designed to help with the delivery of their underpinning knowledge as well as support them with their internal and external assessments.

If your learners sat an exam or set task in the January series, Results Day is 17 March

Some learners have been concerned at not being able to find the BTEC Nationals on the UCAS application website.

Our advice is:

1) Enter "BTEC National" into the qualification search field.
2) Select: "Pearson BTEC Level 3 National [relevant size/GLH] (First teaching Sept 2016)"
3) Select the relevant subject/pathway.

If you search for a "2019" BTEC or if you omit the word "National", you won't find it. All the Nationals from 2016 onwards are categorised under "first teaching Sept 16", as it is part of the new suite regardless of the year of first teaching for a specific subject.
