December 2021 Business update

3 December 2021

This last update of the year should appear slimmer as many items have been moved to the delivery and assessment support pages for each of the four qualifications. You can find out more about this support by opening the delivery or assessment support tab under each qualification below.

Also included are the dates when the autumn exam materials will be uploaded. Information on the 2022 exam series now includes some new information on contingency arrangements. The May/June 2022 timetables have now been confirmed and there are two CPD events on 7 and 8 December which may be of interest.

I do hope that you will be able to enjoy a relaxing break over the Christmas holidays and look forward to working with you in the New Year.

May/June 2022 exam series

The Department for Education and Ofqual have now released their consultation outcomes on the proposed changes to the assessment of GCSEs, AS and A Levels in 2022.

This will apply to:

  • AS and A level Business,
  • GCSE Business
  • International GCSE Business

The purpose of advance information is to support students’ revision, and it is intended to give information in advance about the focus of the content of the Summer 2022 exams. We have also made the decision to make advance information available for our International GCSEs in Business, Commerce and Economics, in line with the approach taken for UK GCSE qualifications. Advance information does not apply to International Advanced Levels in Business and Economics which have a modular assessment structure.

Our website is up-to-date with FAQs on advance information.

The JCQ document aims to give teachers a further view of what advance information is and is not, and to answer key questions.

The Advance Information will be released no later than 7 February 2022 but could be earlier, depending on any change in the severity of the pandemic.

Contingency arrangements that are being put in place in the unlikely event that examinations cannot take place in May/June 2022.

Grading

Ofqual has also published its position on grading (grade boundaries) for the May/June 2022 exam series.

Training and Professional Development

The colour accounting framework provides engaging, accessible, and effective teaching materials for the teaching of business finance and accounting for Level 3 learners. The materials can be used for both BTEC Nationals in Business and Enterprise, Unit 3 and for A level Business, Theme 2

This introductory session sets out the pedagogy and introduces the framework. Later sessions will delve more deeply into the key topics.

The fourth in our series of monthly online Business network events, focuses on marking practice. To support you with mocks and preparing for assessment in 2022 this session will focus on marking levels-based responses.

We are always looking to recruit examiners across our qualifications. This is an excellent opportunity to gain invaluable insight into assessment and to work with other examiners to get some fresh teaching and learning ideas and approaches for your subject. More information about our vacancies, the application criteria and which subjects are currently recruiting can be found on our Assessment Associates web page.

Ahead of the publication of the advance information, we have been working with JCQ awarding organisations to provide some further guidance to help teachers and students better understand the advance information (for example what will be covered and the level of variation to expect), to aid planning ahead of the release of advance information.

This guidance aims to give teachers and students an indication of the approach that will be taken to advance information and is now available to access under 'Summer 2022 support' on the  'Teaching and Learning Materials' page for GCSE Business.

This guidance does not replace the advance information itself which will be released  by 7 February 2022 at the latest, unless the Department for Education (DfE) decides on an earlier release date. It should also be read alongside the JCQ advance information guidance which has already been published.

Help your GCSE Business students prepare for mocks and stay confident with the free Pearson Revise web app and a 55% discount* on revision books!
