Post 16 Level 2 Business qualifications
We now have five Level 2 Technical Certificates included in the 16+ performance tables in England as well as our non-measures BTEC Firsts in Business.
Level 2 Technical Certificates (240 glh)
BTEC Level 2 Technicals are intermediate qualifications for post-16 learners who want to specialise in a specific occupation, occupational area or technical role. They prepare learners for work or an Apprenticeship by giving them the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge, technical and practical skills, and to apply these skills in work-related environments. The qualifications also provide progression to Level 3 Tech Level qualifications.
Find out more about each qualification:
BTEC Level 2 Technicals have been developed to meet the Department for Employment (DfE) requirements for qualifications to be offered as Technical Certificates for 16–19-year-olds.
The Level 2 Technical Certificate in Marketing is on the 2020 DfE List (not on the 2019 list). The other four qualifications above are on both the 2019 and the 2020 lists.
BTEC Firsts for post 16 learners
The BTEC Firsts in Business are non-measures qualifications and there are three sizes suitable for post 16 learners:
• BTEC First Certificate (240 glh)
• BTEC First Extended Certificate (360 glh)
• BTEC First Diploma (480 glh)
We have made some changes to these qualifications from the 2018-19 academic year for post-16 Level 2 learners starting in September 2018.
Learners will no longer have to aggregate a Pass across all the core units to pass the whole qualification in the Certificate, Extended Certificate and Diploma sizes.
Optional units from the Diploma (the largest size) and are now available in the smaller sizes (Certificate and Extended Certificate).
You will now be able to register new learners on these revised BTEC Firsts (Certificate, Extended Certificate and Diploma sizes) up to December 2024, with final certification in December 2026.
Onscreen, on demand testing
Both the Level 2 Technical Certificates (in Unit 1) and the BTEC Firsts (in Unit 2) use onscreen on-demand testing.
The first attempt at the external assessment(s) is included in the registration fee.
Test bookings should be made in advance of the test being sat. Test bookings can be made with two hours notice. There are no late fees. If a booking is made for a learner and they do not attend the test (they are marked as absent) there is no resit charge made to the centre. If a first sitting is marked absent, any subsequent entry on the same registration would be considered the first sitting.
A resit is charged at £26.80 per unit. Test results can take up to 56 days to be announced and learners can only be entered for a resit after they have received the results from their first sitting. When a candidate has taken two tests, the better result will count.
Preparatory work needs to be done before these tests can be run.
