UTAGs, what happens next?

10 November 2021: deadline for submitting UTAGs

November-December:  quality assurance checks once the U-TAGs have been submitted. You may be contacted in November or December to provide the evidence that you have collated and recorded to support the U-TAG judgements.

13 January 2022: we will aim to confirm that your UTAGs have been accepted by this date.

Assessment 2021-2022

Two Types of adaptation:

There are two types of adaptation for internal assessment that are available with the purpose of giving time back to teaching and learning:

Streamlined unit assessment
In-unit adaptation
  • a reduction in the number of internally assessed units that need to be fully assessed
  • mandatory or optional units but not synoptic units
  • a reduction in the amount of assessment evidence needed
  • BTEC Nationals (QCF and RQF)
  • BTEC Firsts
  • BTEC Tech Awards
  • BTEC Level 2 Technicals

Please note the following requirements:

  • All content must be taught.
  • Although adaptations are available, centres should consider whether they are required to give time back to teaching and learning. Adaptations can be applied at a centre's discretion where the pandemic continues to impact learners.
  • Adaptations are only available in this academic year, for assessment due to take place between 1 September 2021- 31 August 2022. There are currently no plans to have these adaptations extend to learners who take assessments in 2022/23, regardless of when they are due to certificate.  

2020-2021: the Qualification-level  ‘Teacher Assessed Grade’ (QTAG) processes ensured that learners were able to claim certification.  

2021-2022: QTAGs not permitted.

2021-2022: an updated adaptation called ‘streamlined assessment’.  Streamlined assessment is where you will only be required to assess one Learning Aim from the selected unit.

Not all qualifications are able to use the streamlined adaptations, and some qualifications do not have any assessment adaptations in place, due to their smaller size.

The option to streamline the number of assessments indicated in the guidance is at the centre’s discretion upon reflection of the continued impact of disruption to learners caused by the pandemic.

Centres should continue to plan to deliver all content and assessment to ensure learners are best placed for their future progression. However, streamlined assessment is available, if required, to create additional time for lost teaching and learning.

Support for BTEC qualifications

The colour accounting framework provides engaging, accessible, and effective teaching materials for the teaching of business finance and accounting for Level 3 learners. The materials can be used for both BTEC Nationals in Business and Enterprise, Unit 3 and for A level Business, Theme 2.

This introductory session sets out the pedagogy and introduces the framework.

Later sessions (in January 2022) will delve more deeply into the key topics.

Two briefing sessions aimed at UK Centres who are currently delivering either a BTEC Level 1/2 Tech Award, First or Technical and/or Level 3 National qualification(s) in Business and Enterprise.

This session will be for teachers who would like to ask questions and discuss our approved alternative arrangements of streamlined assessment guidance for all learners this year (2021/2022).

The Department for Education (DfE) has confirmed that qualifications approved for inclusion in the KS4 2020 performance tables will also be included in performance tables for 2021, 2022 and 2023.

Our BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Enterprise will continue to count towards 2021, 2022 and 2023 Key Stage 4 performance tables. You can continue to register learners onto this qualification for completion in 2023.

In September 2020 the DfE published the technical guidance for KS4 qualifications to be included in 2024 performance tables in England. In order to meet these new requirements, Pearson has submitted the Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 Tech Award in Enterprise for approval for 2024 performance tables.

We've retained many key features of our current BTEC Tech Awards:

  • Simple 3 component structure in most sectors
  • Much of the teaching and learning content has been retained with some changes made to enhance clarity.
  • Current Tech Awards have 40% external assessment, so no change was needed to meet new requirements.

New additions to meet KS4 performance measure requirements will include:

  • Pearson Set Assignments for internal components, released with plenty of time for preparation and assessment to suit your programme timetable
  • Mark-based and moderated assessments that are compensatory within each component and across the qualification giving learners more opportunities to achieve.

If you are starting to deliver the Tech Award this coming September then your learners will be claiming certification in 2024.  This means that they will be studying for the new (2022) Tech Award qualification.

The new qualification requires you to use Pearson Set Assignments (PSAs) for Components 1 and 2 and these PSAs will not be available in the 2021-2022 school year. The new qualification also requires Component 3 to be assessed in the year that learners claim certification.

This means that no assessment for the new qualification can take place in the 2021-2022 school year.  In terms of content there is very little change so you can still deliver this.  You may also be interested in developing enterprise skills in your learners and there are two competitions you may wish to consider to help you do this.

The first is the tycoon competition run by the Peter Jones Foundation which is an ideal way to develop enterprise skills and which provides teaching resources to help you.

The second is a social enterprise challenge which has been running for two years now and which encourages both creativity and enterprise.  It is called Be The Future.

BTEC Level 1/2 Firsts in Business

The BTEC Firsts in Business are not included in DfE performance tables.

Streamlined unit assessment means that the number of internally assessed units that need to be assessed in full is reduced, these could be mandatory or optional, but cannot be units that are synoptic.

So, for the First Award, Unit 3 would not be eligible.

It's an ideal qualification for learners who are intending to progress directly to employment in an administrative role, or to a business administration apprenticeship.

This change affects all 2016 (RQF) BTEC Nationals in Business and in Enterprise & Entrepreneurship

What has changed?

There will no longer be a two-week PART A pre-release window. Instead, learners will be given a Pearson-set Research Pack.

Part A (Low control) will now be sat in the afternoon before Part B, which will be sat the following morning (these dates will be specified by Pearson)

Learners will be able to annotate their Part A Research Pack and prepare up to two sides of notes to take in to Part B (Medium control).

The specifications on the qualification pages will be updated to reflect this change.

FAQs

What has changed for the Part A of the assessment?

The change to the condition of the assessment is that the pre-release period has been shortened and learners will be provided with a Pearson-set research pack, instead of having to carry out their own research.

We have worked with our subject and assessment experts in designing the Research Pack (Part A) to ensure that it will stimulate and engage the learners to respond with a sound level of understanding.  As such, we expect the introduction of the Research Pack (Part A) to provide accessible and meaningful information to enable all learners to grasp the context and engage with the assessment. 

We believe that the provision of research of the same quality to all  learners will support learners who  may have been disadvantaged by not being able to access good quality research.   

What has changed for the Part B of the assessment?

Nothing has changed in Part B of the assessment, either in format or style. The change that has been made is in the mark scheme, where the focus is now on the need to use rather that obtain market research.  The new Assessment Focus 3 is below.

Why has Pearson made these changes? 

There are two fundamental reasons for the change:

  • increasing levels of evidence that different learners and different centres are having variable experiences in their interaction with the assessment and;  
  • the outcomes of the assessment over recent series have seen significantly increasing levels of homogenous  learner response which makes it increasingly difficult to differentiate outcomes within the awarding process for the unit.

Have you made changes to the timetable to reflect the Unit 2 changes?

Yes. We have removed the Part A 10-day window for learners to complete the practical investigation and added a 2-hour (Part A) review period on the afternoon prior to the Part B assessment. The Part B set task is timetabled for the morning after Part A.

Is there a new administration guide that we can refer to that takes into consideration the new arrangements of Unit 2?

Yes. We will be issuing an updated Administrative Support Guide to reflect the changes to the Part A document that is released before the start of the Part B examination.

Can you confirm the supervision and control for Unit 2 Part A and Part B?

Part A is low control and Part B must be conducted under medium-control supervision. Full details of supervision controls can be found in our Instructions for Conducting External Assessments (ICEA) document.

Can students make notes during the Part A review period and bring these notes into Part B?

Students can bring hand written annotated notes from their review of Part A materials into the Part B session but no other materials other than the Part A document should be present for Part B.

Should we retain Part A at our centre? If so, for how long? 

Yes. Centres must retain each learner’s Part A document and keep it securely until the end of the Review of Marking and Moderation period. The Part A document must not be returned to Pearson with the Part B document.

Standardisation Marking

This event is for all teachers who assess learner work for internally assessed units on the qualification. During this event you will learn how to accurately assess a ‘Pass’ criteria and also a ‘Distinction’ criteria. During the session you will have the opportunity to assess samples of learner’s work in order to gain a better understanding of how the evidence submitted by the learner meets the requirements for a ‘Pass’ grade or a ‘Distinction grade. In addition, you will also learn the differences and what constitutes a merit or a distinction. You will be given some useful guidance to refer back to in your assessment of Pass, Merit and Distinction criteria.

Learning Aims:

  • To learn how to mark and assess pass criteria
  • To learn how to mark and assess distinction criteria
  • To investigate what makes a distinction piece of work different from a merit piece of work.

Once you have understood how to apply the standard in this session, you can then apply this principal across the unit(s) that you teach. This event and the qualification covered, is for UK centres only. This event counts as 2 hours CPD.

The main proposal is to introduce a binary system of T levels and A levels at Level 3, where most young people pursue one of these qualifications at the age of 16.

Timelines

Qualifications which overlap with T Levels

No changes are being made to technical qualifications until the 2023/24 academic year at the earliest.  In 2022, we hope to hear which qualifications will and will not be funded for the 2023-2024 academic year.

Qualifications which overlap with A Levels

No changes are being made to academic qualifications, including Applied General qualifications, until the 2024/25 academic year at the earliest.  In 2022, we hope to learn about the criteria qualifications will need to satisfy in order to qualify for funding from 2024.

BTEC qualifications can continue to be available where there is a clear need for skills and knowledge that T Levels and A levels alone cannot provide. For example:

  • Alternatives to T Levels
  • Small specialist qualifications to sit alongside T Levels
  • Alternatives to A levels

The #ProtectStudentChoice campaign, focuses on the Department for Education’s current review of post-16 qualifications. The Six Form Colleges Association (SFCA) has launched a petition urging the government to reconsider restricting students' choice of qualifications at the age of 16.

Changes to Pearson BTEC International Level 2

New International Level 2 qualifications have been developed for first teaching from September 2022.

Specification

For first teaching from September 2022 this qualification comes in four sizes:

  • BTEC International Level 2 Award in Business (120 glh)
  • BTEC International Level 2 Certificate in Business (240 glh)
  • BTEC International Level 2 Extended Certificate in Business (360 glh)
  • BTEC International Level 2 Diploma in Business. (480 glh)

BTEC Higher Nationals in Business

BTEC Higher Nationals in Business

The BTEC Higher Nationals in Business have been revalidated. The specification is now live on our website and HN Global. This is available for first teaching from September 2021.

The new qualifications include enhanced work-related curriculum that is designed to address an increasing need for high quality professional and technical education pathways at Levels 4 and 5, equipping students with the right skills and competencies for the workplace or progression to further higher education study.

The last registration date for the 2016 specification was 31 August 2021. All new registrations from the 1 September 2021 are on the new specification.

The 2016 Higher Nationals in Business expired on 31st August 2021. Existing HNC/D students can continue to complete their studies on the current specification.  

HNC ​Business students completing (full or part time) after 31 August 2021 can still be registered as top ups , but any HNC Business transfers will have to be registered by contacting examsofficer@pearson.com who will be able to complete registration manually.

This session will discuss:

• Examples of good industry engagement including presentations direct from centres.

• How to engage employers in the delivery of your qualification and increasing students’ employability.

• Sharing of good practice discussion – we invite centres to share and discuss their employer and industry engagement.

• Important Pearson updates for your subject and how this relates to teaching and learning.

You will also have the opportunity to share your ideas, ask for help or suggestions from other providers so you can pick up some practical tools and advice to take back into your classroom.

This event can count as 1.5 Hours of CPD.

We are launching Pearson Authorised Assignment Briefs (AABs) for BTEC Higher Nationals in Business, which will replace the Example Assessment Briefs (EABs) that are currently available as part of our support offer. These new AABs are available for the latest BTEC Higher Nationals in Business specification, as the old specification expires on 31 August 2021.  

Authorised Assignment Briefs have been developed to support centres with their assessment strategy for the delivery of core units, and a sample of selected specialist/optional units. These AABs replace the existing Example Assessment Briefs (EABs).

AABs can be used as a reference point for the development of unique assignments, which are tailored to a specific location, employment context and the centre’s approach to the subject. They can also be used ‘off the shelf’ if this works for a centre’s local needs.

Following Ofqual’s announcement which confirmed that exams and assessments will go ahead as planned for the academic year 2021-22, we have recently released guidance to support centres, should you need to make adaptations to teaching and delivery this year.

We have also created further guidance about quality assurance and assessment for your BTEC Higher Nationals and External Examination. For 2021-2022 external examination visits will continue remotely. If the opportunity arises to safely resume centre visits, we will advise centres of this.

Please note that after 30 September 2021 you will no longer be able to make claims for assessments that took place between 1 August 2020 and 31 August 2021 using Unit Level Teacher Assessed Grades (UTAGs).
