The use of observations in the Business Skills BTEC Diplomas
We'd like to provide some clarification on the use of observations as a form of evidence for the Business Skills BTEC Diploma qualifications.
For competence units, evidence can take a variety of forms, including direct observation of the learner’s performance by their assessor. For a full list of types of evidence that can be used for the Business Skills BTEC Diplomas, see the 'Types of Evidence' page in the specification for the relevant Business Skills qualification.
For knowledge units, the learner needs to provide evidence that is appropriate to achieve the knowledge-based Assessment Criteria and Learning Outcomes of each unit. Observations should not form primary evidence of achievement, but can be used to supplement more traditional forms of evidence (such as assignments, presentations, case studies or reports), or to provide sector contextualisation or evidence of how the learner has applied knowledge from the BTEC Professional qualification within their job role. However, the focus should be on ensuring that the learner can sufficiently demonstrate they have met the relevant Assessment Criteria.
