New draft specifications for GCE French, German and Spanish (2016) now available
The new draft specifications and sample assessment materials for Pearson Edexcel GCE AS and A level qualifications in French, German and Spanish (9-1) for first teaching from September 2016 have now been submitted to Ofqual for accreditation.
The drafts are available in the A level Modern Languages (2016) section.
The format and content of the new qualifications are significantly different to the current qualifications. The AS will be completely decoupled from the A level and, although students may still be entered for AS in one year and A level in another, the AS results will no longer contribute to the A level qualification, as is currently the case.
Other changes at AS and A level include:
- the inclusion of reading, listening and translation assessments
- a renewed emphasis on knowledge and critical understanding of the target language culture.
AS students must study either a literary work or a film.
A level students must study either a film and a literary text or 2 literary texts.
Content will focus on:
- social issues and trends
- political and/or intellectual and/or artistic culture.
A level students will also engage in independent research.
