BTEC Nationals: improvements to assessment in some subjects

In response to DfE feedback, we've made changes to the pre-release materials and instructions around externally-assessed tasks and updated our assessment materials to reflect this.

BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Animal Management (2016) – changes to the pre-release for external tasks

In response to DfE feedback, we’ve updated our sample assessments to reflect the changes made to the pre-release materials and instructions around externally assessed tasks for Units 1 and 2.

Here’s a summary of what’s changed for each unit so you’re clear what you and your learners will need to do when preparing for the next assessment.

Unit 1: Animal Breeding and Genetics

What has changed?

  • We have reduced the quantity of pre-released information/materials, so the pre-release now indicates only the species focused on in Part B.

  • Part B will now take place in a specific timetabled session.

Part A changes:

Instructions to teachers/tutors and learners has changed:

  • the time for learners to undertake Part A has been reduced 6 hours to 3 hours, so their research is more focused.

  • learners must now be monitored during the 3 hour preparation period in accordance with the new monitored preparation conditions

  • the number of A4 sheets learner may produce for use in Part B has been reduced from 4 to 2.

Part B changes:

  • We have updated Part B to reflect the changes in Part A, for example Part B includes more information on the scenario.

  • The stimulus material for Question 2 (b) has been changed for clarity and the command verb for the question has been changed from ‘Assess’ to ‘Justify’.

Unit 3: Animal Welfare and Ethics

  • We have reduced the quantity of pre-released information/materials, so the pre-release now indicates only the species focused on in Part B.

  • Part B will now take place in a specific timetabled session.

Part A changes:

Instructions to teachers/tutors has been changed:

  • the time for learners to undertake Part A has reduced from 6 hours to 3 hours to focus learners’ research

  • learners must now be monitored during the 3 hour preparation period in accordance with the new monitored preparation conditions

  • the number of A4 sheets learner may produce for use in Part B has reduced from 4 to 2.

Part B changes:

  • The set task information has been changed to reduce the information provided.

  • Advice has been added on the time the learner should take in creating their answer for all activities.

BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Art and Design (2016) – changes to the instructions for external tasks

In response to DfE feedback, we have updated our sample assessments to reflect the changes to the pre-release materials and instructions around externally-assessed tasks.

Here is a summary of what has changed for each unit so you are clear what you and your learners will need to do when preparing for the next assessment.

Which units have changed?

  • Unit 2: Critical and Contextual Studies in Art and Design

  • Unit 6: Managing a Client Brief

  • Unit 7: Developing and Realising Creative Intentions

What has changed?

Unit 2: Critical and Contextual Studies in Art and Design

  • The task has been redesigned and changed from being a single part to being Part A and Part B and the rubrics have been updated to be in line with the changes made to the unit content.

  • The Part A booklet is released to learners four weeks before Part B is scheduled.

  • The Part A booklet includes a monitored preparation period of three hours.

  • Learners are recommended to spend up to 15 hours on their independent research; this includes the three hours of monitored preparation.

  • Stipulations on format of notes and notes that can be taken into the supervised assessment have changed from four to two sides of A4 pages.

  • The number of activities has changed from two to one.

  • Assessment Outcome 2 marks have changed from 18 to 20.

  • Assessment Outcome 3 wording has changed, marks have changed from 18 to 12, Mark bands have changed from five to four.

  • Assessment Outcome 4 marks have changed from 12 to 16.

Unit 6: Managing a Client Brief

  • The rubrics have been updated to be in line with the changes made to the unit content.

  • The hours for undertaking supervised assessment have changed from 5 to 15.

  • The hours for monitored preparation have changed from 25 to 10 hours.

  • The number of presentation slides has changed from 30 to 12-15.

  • Speaker notes have been set to a maximum of 600 words.

  • In the sample marking grid Assessment Outcomes 1, 2 and 4, wording has changed from ‘ideas’ to ‘proposals’.

Unit 7: Developing and Realising Creative Intentions

  • The availability and timing of the assessment has changed from a 12 to an
    eight-week period timetabled by Pearson.

  • The hours for monitored preparation have changed from 40 to 20.

  • The hours for undertaking supervised assessment have changed from five to 25.

  • The release of the booklet to learners has changed to be on a specified date.

  • The number of pages for the digital portfolio has changed from 16-20 to 12-15.

  • The maximum words of supporting text have been set to a maximum of 500.

  • The activities in the set task section have changed from four to a single activity.

BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Children’s Play, Learning and Development  (2016) – changes to the External Assessments for Unit 4 ONLY.

In response to DfE feedback, we’ve updated our sample assessments to reflect the changes made to the pre-release materials and instructions around externally-assessed tasks.

Here’s a summary of the changes so you’re clear what you and your learners will need to do when preparing for the assessment from 2019 onwards.

Part A

An introduction section has been added to clarify the:

  • purpose of the assessment

  • availability and timings of the assessment

  • requirements for “monitored” preparation and formal supervision.  

Part A will be released 4 weeks (not 6 weeks) before Part B has to be undertaken.

Instructions to teachers/tutors and learners has been changed to reflect the changes above and  includes:

  • the recommendation for learners to spend on independent research reading secondary sources has changed from 18 to 8-10 hours

  • “monitored” preparation in 6 scheduled hours

  • stipulations on format of notes and notes that can be taken into the supervised assessment have changed from 6 to 4 sides of A4.  

Part B

Set Task section wording has been revised to reflect the changes in the instructions for teachers and tutors and learners sections, this includes:

  • wording for Activities 1, 2, 3 and 4 has changed for clarity.

  • activity 3 marks have changed from 15 to 20.

  • activity 4 marks have changed from 20 to 15.

  • Marking grids have been revised in accordance with Activities 3 and 4 changes, marks have been revised accordingly.

What does this mean for you?

These minor changes will not affect any teaching or preparation done to date. We recommend that you check the exam timetable to see the dates for the assessments to be undertaken.

These changes will apply to the 2019 assessments onwards.

Will this mean changes to teaching and learning completed for this unit so far?

BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Creative Digital Media Production (2016) – changes to the instructions for external tasks

In response to DfE feedback, we have updated our sample assessments to reflect the changes to the pre-release materials and instructions around externally-assessed tasks.

Here is a summary of what has changed for each unit so you are clear what you and your learners will need to do when preparing for the next assessment.

Which units have changed?

  • Unit 3: Digital Media Skills

  • Unit 5: Specialist Subject Investigation

  • Unit 8: Responding to a Commission

What has changed?

Unit 3: Digital Media Skills

  • The availability and timing of the assessment has changed from a 12 to an 8 week period.

  • The hours for undertaking supervised assessment have changed from 30 to 20.

  • The set task now has monitored preparation sessions of 5 hours.

  • The number of activities has changed from 3 to 2.

  • The wording in the set task brief section has changed.

  • Requirements for changed Activity 1 and hours to complete the formal supervised assessment have changed from 3 to 5.

  • Requirements for changed Activity 2 and annotated digital e-portfolio have been set to a maximum of 15 pages.

  • In the sample marking grid the titles for Assessment focus 1 and 2 have changed.

  • For each assessment focus wording in some bullet points for some of the bands has changed.

Unit 5: Specialist Subject Investigation

  • The 18 hours for conducting research have been split between 12 hours of independent primary research and 6 hours of monitored secondary research.

  • A stimulus material page has been added has been added to Part B.

  • Wording in the set task section for Activities 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 has been changed to reflect the stimulus material.

  • In the Sample marking grid, assessment focus 1, 2, 3 and 4 titles have changed.

  • For assessment focus 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 wording in some bullet points for some of the bands has changed.

  • Mark distribution between bands for assessment focus 4 and 5 has changed to be correct.

Unit 8: Responding to a Commission

  • The tasks have been redesigned and changed from being Part A and Part B to being a single part.

  • The hours for undertaking supervised assessment have changed from 5 to 6.

  • The total marks for the task has changed from 75 to 72.

  • Learners are recommended to spend up to 10 hours on independent research activities outside of the monitored preparation sessions.

  • Stipulations on format of notes and notes that can be taken into the supervised assessment have changed from 4 to 3 sides of A4.

  • In the set task section marks for activities 1 and 2 have changed from 15 to 16 and Activity 4 from 25 to 20.

Here’s a summary of the changes so you’re clear what you and your learners will need to do when preparing for the assessment from 2019 onwards.

Part A

Part B

Part B will now be undertaken in a Pearson timetabled session. Set task section wording has been revised to reflect the changes in the instructions for teachers and tutors and learners sections, this includes:

  • Wording for activities 1, 2, 3 and 4 has changed for clarity.

  • Activity 3 marks have changed from 15 to 20.

  • Activity 4 marks have changed from 20 to 15.

In response to DfE feedback, we’ve updated our sample assessments to reflect the changes made to materials and instructions around externally-assessed tasks.

Here’s a summary of what’s changed so you’re clear what you and your learners will need to do when preparing for the next assessment.

Which unit is affected?

What has changed?

This has changed from a single part task to a task split into Part A/Part B.

Instructions to teachers/tutors and learners has changed to reflect:

  • The inclusion of wording on independent preparation period, timings and requirements for release of task booklet, timings and requirements for monitored preparation session, stipulations on notes and an overview of the Part B supervised assessments.

  • The notes must only contain performance and production notes from the performances learners have watched in preparation (including quotes and contextual facts from their research)

  • Notes must not include continuous prose or exceed 1000 words.

  • Notes should be kept securely by the centre in advance of the supervised session for Part B.

We have also included unseen activities in Part B for learners to apply their research in a more focused and structured manner.

Marking grids have been revised in accordance with activities 1, 2 and 3 questions, marks have been revised accordingly to reflect the splitting of the task.

Do the changes apply immediately?

These changes will apply to the 2019 assessments onwards.

Will this mean changes to teaching and learning completed for these units so far?

You will need to familiarise learners with the new format of the task with Part A and Part B.

BTEC Level 3 Nationals in Sport and Exercise Science (2016) -– changes to the External Assessments for Unit 3 and 13.

In response to DfE feedback, we have revised the external assessments for Units 3 and 13, which take effect from January 2019 onwards.

What has changed for Units 3 and 13?

From January 2019 there will be no pre-release/ preparation time (part A). Therefore, learners  will sit each external assessment in one single session as timetabled by Pearson.

As a consequence, the assessment time has been increased from 2 hours to 3 hours to allow for additional reading and planning time.

Do the changes apply immediately?

These changes will apply from January 2019 assessments onwards.

Will this mean changes to teaching and learning completed for this unit so far?

There is no change in the unit content. You will need to adjust how you prepare your learners for the external assessment for 2019 onwards.  

Which qualifications do these changes apply to?

The changes apply to Units 3 and 13 in these qualifications:
