Our Edexcel International Advanced Level in French specification and support materials have been developed with the help of teachers, universities and subject expert groups.
The specification is designed to inspire students, enabling them to use French Language independently and encouraging a deeper understanding of French language and culture. It caters for a range of student interests, with support for those who see languages as a skills to enhance career or travel prospects.

This qualification is 100% externally assessed and has a modular structure, with exams in January and June.
Our General Topic Areas (GTA) focus on France and the wider French speaking world exploring cultural, social, political, moral, intellectual, technological issues and trends.
Resources and training programmes will be available to support you to deliver this new qualification with confidence from September 2016 onwards.
This qualification is modular and comprises of four units. Unit 1 and Unit 2 (IAS) (may be awarded as a discrete qualification or contribute up to 50 per cent of the total International Advanced Level marks) and Unit 3 and unit 4 (IA2). Speaking communication skills are assessed in Units 1 and 3 and skills of listening, reading and writing are assessed in Units 2 and 4.
Achievement in IAL French is benchmarked against the advanced level General Certificate of Education (GCE) and the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) at level B2.

Unit 1. Spoken Expression and Response
Response and discussion in relation to GTAs
(30% of IAS; 40 marks; 8-10 minute assessment in two sections with 15 minutes preparation time)
Unit 2. Understanding and Written Response
Comprehension and essay writing in relation to GTAs
(70% of IAS; 90 marks; 2h 30m)
Unit 3. Understanding and Spoken Response
Advanced level understanding as well as speaking skills where students present and take a clear stance on any issue of their choice
(30% of IA2; 40 marks; 11-13 minutes)
Unit 4. Research, Understanding and Written Response
Convey comprehension of target language texts and recordings in relation to GTAs
(70% of IA2; 90 marks; 2h 30)
This specification is available for teaching in international centres only, and is assessed through a written exam instead of coursework.
