Pearson offers a wide choice of topics to enable you to tailor the course content to your student’s interests. Content is relevant to the real world and encourages students to develop an appreciation of religious thought and its contribution to individuals, communities and societies.

Our specifications help to develop a holistic understanding of religion, facilitating enquiry into the purposes and commitments of human life, especially as expressed in philosophy, ethics and religion.

Our assessments are designed to be accessible to all students with a clear structure and easy to follow command words, and we’ll help you and your students to fully understand the assessment requirements.

The new Edexcel AS and A level Religious Studies specifications have been developed together and are designed to be completely co-teachable to aid planning and progression.

We’ll provide teaching and learning support to help you plan and deliver the new specifications and fully understand the new content and assessment requirements.

What's changing

AS and A level Religious Studies 2016: What's changing

These changes apply to all awarding organisations’ specifications:

  • Students need to study 3 approaches from a list of 4 topics: Philosophy of Religion, Religious Ethics, Textual Study and Study of Religion.
  • Students need to make connections between all approaches studied.
  • The comparison of the writings of scholars is a key element in the new criteria to explore differing viewpoints about the development of ideas.

Our approach

We’ve worked with the teaching community, higher education, learned societies and subject associations to design our new AS and A level Religious Studies specifications for 2016. Our ambition has been to develop religious studies qualifications that you will know and recognise, and to allow you to teach topics and religions you know your students will enjoy.

We have commissioned and conducted our own research, including international benchmarking and trialling. This research has helped us to build on the strengths of our current specification and to identify the skills students need to progress to further study in religious studies.
