Edexcel AS and A level Physical Education (2016)

Supporting learning through practice

Our Performance Analysis Assessment and support materials are designed to allow a large section of the content to be taught in a practical way thus allowing theory to be understood through practice.

Students will receive a well-rounded introduction to the world of PE, sport and sport science through the combination of physical performance and academic challenges.

Our qualifications have a straightforward structure with four engaging and up-to-date components, assessed through externally examined papers and non-examined assessments designed to be accessible for all students.

The content builds on the understanding developed at the previous Key Stage, increasing breadth whilst avoiding unnecessary repetition and also ensuring that the learners new to the subject are appropriately supported.

We’ll have a programme of teaching and learning support to help you implement the new specifications, particularly with new and unfamiliar content and skills.

Inside Track

The senior team has produced an online magazine designed to support the teaching of Pearson GCE PE (2016) specification. The termly magazine provides information to support centres in their delivery of the course with articles written by senior examiners and moderators and guest writers, together with information about issues such as the latest sports technology and initiatives for identifying and developing talent.

What's changing

AS and A level Physical Education 2016: What's changing

These changes will apply to all awarding organisations’ specifications:

  • There is an increased emphasis on the theoretical content now worth 70% of the qualification assessed through examination.
  • The subject content includes more detailed expectations for developing qualitative and quantitative data skills – 5% of the qualification.
  • The requirements for carrying out and assessing Non-examined assessment (Practicals and coursework) have changed:
    • Non-examined assessment is worth 30% of the qualification, this comprises of the practical performance and performance analysis, both of which will be internally assessed and externally moderated.
    • Practicals are now 15% of the qualification and must be one activity – either as a player/performer or coach from the list of activities prescribed by DfE.
    • Performance analysis is worth 15% of the qualification.

Our approach

We’re working with the teaching community, higher education, learned societies and subject associations to design our new qualifications for 2016. Our ambition is to develop physical education qualifications that you will know and recognise, but to update them with new and engaging topics of study.

We have commissioned and conducted our own research, including international benchmarking and trialling. This research will help us to build on the strengths of our current specifications and to identify the skills students need to progress to further study in physical education or sport related subjects.
